3. Introduction
❏ Marlowe is one of the most suggestive figures of the
English Renaissance, and the greatest of Shakespeare’s
predecessors.
❏ Marlowe’s deployment of classical idioms as well as
geographical interests; climatic attempt, once again , to
connect Marlowe, as a “Heterodox subversive’(150), to
his “Transgressive” protagonists.
❏ The Father of the English Drama
4. Marlowe’s Life
❖ Marlowe born in Canterbury, only a few months
before Shakespeare.
❖ He was the son of a poor shoemaker, but through the
kindness of a patron was educated at Cambridge.
❖ When he came to London, his soul was surging with
the ideas of the Renaissance.
❖ He became an actor and lived in a low-tavern
atmosphere of excess and wretchedness.
❖ Thereafter, notwithstanding his wretched life, he
holds steadily to a high literary purpose.
5. His Works
★ Marlow is famous for four dramas, now known as the Marlowesque
or one-man type of Tragedy.
➢ Tamburlaine
➢ Dr. Faustus
➢ The Jew of Malta
➢ Edward the Second
❏ Tamburlaine : The First of these is Tamburlaine, the
story of Timur the Tartar. Timur begins as a shepherd
chief, who first rebels and then triumphs over the
Persian KIng.
6. ❏ Dr. Faustus : The Second Play, one of the best of
Marlowe’s Works. The story is that of a scholar who
longs for infinite knowledge,and who turns from
Theology,Philosophy,Medicine and law , the four
sciences of the time.
❏ The Jew of Malta : Marlowe’s Third play is The
jew of Malta, a study of the lust for wealth ,
which centers about Barabas, a terrible old
money lender.
❏ Edward the Second : Marlowe’s last play is
Edward the Second , a tragic study of king’s
weakness and misery. In point of style and
Dramatic construction ,it is by far the best of
Marlowe’s plays, and is a worthy predecessor of
Shakespeare’s historical Drama.
7. Marlowe’s Contribution to Elizabethan
Drama
● Marlowe dramatized the History of Tamburlaine . The world conqueror
and Dr Faustus a memorable in pursuit in universal knowledge .
● Marlowe made improvement in the field of tragedy and modified the
conception of Tragedy in middle ages .
● Marlowe imported passion Vehemence and Force the Drama. In
Tamburlaine, passion extent in the direct of world conquest.
● Marlowe revolutionized the old conception of Tragedy and made it fit for
the need and new urges of the Renaissance.
● Poetic Grandeur and Poetic Excellence the Drama. Poetized whole of
Renaissance spirit. In place of rhyming lines he introduced and perfected
the Blank Verse.
8. To Sum Up
● Marlowe was The Morning Star of English
Drama.
● Marlowe’s unique style of writing tragedies
and innovativeness that he showed in his
writings made him quite different from the
other playwrights. Thus, he became the
Columbus of a new literary world in England
who paved the path for future Dramatist and
among the one was Shakespeare who followed
him.
