First, you are probably most motivated in the springtime when you first get outside. Second, herbicide labels direct you to apply the herbicide when plants are "actively growing." If there's anytime when weeds are "actively growing," it's in the spring! If you do apply a weed killer to a perennial in spring when weeds are growing fast, you will see evidence of harm to the foliage. However, because sugars are pushing from the roots and rhizomes into the leaves, it can be very difficult for the herbicide to translocate to the roots and underground storage components of the plant. Therefore, you will see a "top-kill" of the invasive plant, but the plant likely will re-sprout. This video gives advice on how to avoid such problems.

Proper planting and watering should make plants self-sufficient after three years in most cases.

Migrant farmworkers face numerous barriers to accessing mental healthcare. They experience high rates of depression, stress, and other mental health issues due to factors like isolation, dangerous working conditions, discrimination, and separation from family. However, less than 25% of migrant farmworkers utilize health centers that provide services tailored to their needs. Best practices to improve mental healthcare for this population include expanding counseling programs, promoting advocacy for safer working conditions, offering language classes, and establishing Spanish-language hotlines. Overcoming barriers like cost, lack of transportation, and cultural beliefs will be important for improving mental health outcomes for migrant farmworkers.

1) Chemist Paul Schettler of Juniata College conducted research in the 1970s-1990s on natural gas deposits in the Marcellus Shale, which underlies Pennsylvania. His work helped determine how gas flows through shale rock.
2) Schettler developed experiments to test shale rock permeability and designed instruments to measure gas flow in wells. This helped energy companies understand natural gas production from shale.
3) While the research provided hands-on learning for students, the demands of working with energy companies led Schettler to focus on teaching. Interest and funding for his work declined in the 1990s but has renewed as energy prices have risen.
