close his eyes and keep on drawing. The narrator sees this experience as an
epiphany. It is described as an almost religious out of body experience. Robert

eyes his other senses take over and he is able to see everything clear.
The title Cathedral can be looked at in two ways. The most obvious one is referring
to the television show about medieval churches and cathedrals and the drawing the
narrator draws to and with Robert. There is a more figurative way of looking at it. A
cathedral is a religious building and in the story you can say that the narrator gets an
almost spiritual out of body experience.
What Raymond Carver tries to tell us with this short story is that we should not be
like the narrator. Nothing good comes from prejudice and preconceptions. You
should rather keep an open mind and conclude from things you experience or see
rather than conclude from things you expect or think. At the end of the story the
narrator learns this and a whole new world opens to him. The blind man helped him

Although she does not specifically classify her faith, Williamson speaks of God, and

I Am Serving As An Instructor
Reading these initial chapters in our textbook comes at an interesting time for me,
as I am currently serving as an instructor for the first time! Speaking from personal
experience, I agree with the authors in that simple skills are a crucial first step in
getting off on the right foot. I believe it would be difficult to recover with students
(as well as your own self esteem) starting out ill prepared. I really wish that I could
have taken this courseprior to serving as an instructor, or at the very least attended
some kind of training to prepare me. Of great importance, as Svinicki and
McKeachie point out, is having a firm grasp on university etiquette to avoid taboo
subjects and relate to students appropriately. Although common sense should prevail,
training in this area may help mitigate issues that may arise with a lack of
understanding on the part of the instructor. I appreciate the timeline that chapter two
offers in relation to preparing to teach three months in advance, and can see myself
referring back to this in the future. This section highlights the importance of avoiding
procrastination in planning, and provides detailed instructions on how to stay on
task. I did find the discussion of course goals and objectives interesting because I
had assumed they would be set by the university or department. Regardless, the
authors make clear the importance of goals and objectives; however from my
experience there doesn t seem to be much emphasis placed on these in the

while he was in the middle of the piece or entered the auditorium during a song. To

hoped that the presence of women would over time change the military, making it

convoluted as Ehrenreich seems unable to let go of the idea that women may still be
able to change corrupt, male dominated systems. She proves herself an optimist in
favor of the difference feminism she previously decried, qualifying her argument with
the belief that women do not change institutions simply by assimilating into them,
only by consciously deciding to fight for change. We need a feminism that teaches
women to say no.
