Teaching Your Clients How to Use WordPressNile Flores
You’ve probably seen it happen- someone complains because they just got a website, but they don’t know how to use it. Their designer or developer or project manager just left them high and dry without some type of direction or documentation.
Let’s face it, as a designer or developer or project manager, you’re definitely going to run into someone who isn’t really that familiar with WordPress. In fact, you’ll encounter all sorts of user levels when it comes to working with clients. How do you teach your client how to use their WordPress website? How do you figure it into your project’s scope? If you don’t like teaching them, what can you do to make sure your relationship with your client ends on a good note because you were diligent to give them the tools they need to continue on their own?
I’ll be going over strategies to help you put together a plan on teaching your clients how to use WordPress. Let’s decrease the frustration together and allow your clients to become enthusiastic WordPress users that are making money.

How to utilize the power of wordpress cms by john perelessjohnpereless
John Pereless explains why Wordpress is a top choice among small business owners as well as professional bloggers. The power of Wordpress resides in it’s backend and built in themes, plugins and extensions for the widgets as well as integration with world wide web 2.0 resources.
Extraordinary projects require total freedom to experiment. Often, traditional CMS’s bring many limitations to the presentation layer, injecting unnecessary layout that can complicate the design of the site. On top of that, you need to spend days ensuring the right security is in place, monitoring performance, and babysitting a CMS. With the new API-first CMS Kentico Cloud, you can develop a website or a mobile application with the technology you love, without the overhead of a traditional CMS platform. The best part is that security and performance are carried out by Kentico Cloud, freeing you to focus on your solution.

The art and science of selecting the right CMSJanus Boye
This presentation is from a tutorial held at the J. Boye Aarhus 13 conference. See http://aarhus13.jboye.com/tutorial/the-art-and-science-of-selecting-the-right-cms/
The goal is to help you and your team understand Web Content Management technologies, architectures, and the marketplace. Janus Boye led an intensive, fast-paced and vendor-neutral introduction to Web Content Management functionality, product categories and specific vendors. The tutorial concluded with a roadmap for product selection.
The 3-hour tutorial also presents a practical approach to selecting a CMS, based on marketplace realities and the experiences gained in many selection projects. While it is easy to document dozens of functional and technical requirements for a content management system (CMS), writing more requirements actually makes it harder to select a product.

As you devise or refine your digital strategies for 2016 and beyond, you’ll want to ensure that you have the right Web Content & Experience Management (WCM) foundation in place.
New architectural approaches and the need to inject content into diverse applications and channels are compelling enterprises to rethink their approach to WCM technology.
For some, this will result in selecting a new WCM system — either from scratch, or to supplement or replace an existing system that no longer suffices. If you’re considering a new Web CMS, then join Tony for this fast-paced tutorial.
The webinar will critically assess the current marketplace, explore future trends, and outline best practices for a successful WCM product selection in this new WCM world. Based on 15 years of experience helping WCM customers select the right tools, Tony will reveal key pitfalls to avoid, allowing you to learn from others' mistakes.

Customisation & Total Cost of Ownership for Multi-Tenant SystemsDoug Winter

It’s no wonder executives fail to understand—or appreciate the differences between—content management systems.
They get different information, explanations, opinions and needs expressed by (1) the IT team, (2) vendors of CMS systems and (3) the marketing squad—all with varying degrees of knowledge and experience. We’d like to clear the air, untangle the problem and explain what to look for and how to make a decision.
This will be an agnostic look at what the systems can do and cannot do, and why
Choosing the "right" CMS (and other things)Sally Lait
Talk given at Front-end London on the 28th May 2015
Digital projects involve a great deal of choices around products and technologies, with a content management system often being integral. Using this scenario, we’ll explore certain pitfalls around selecting technology for the wrong reasons and discuss important questions that should be considered before choices are made.
Including the User: How insights drive business #pswud2017Jeremy Johnson
Design is inclusive by nature. The ability to understand people, their needs, and emotions throughout a journey is what User Experience Designers excel at! That said, many organizations still need that nudge to really get out build true empathy for the people they’re building tools, systems, and apps for. This talk will help you ramp up with modern best practices in insights gathering, while helping you build the case to invest in user understanding through showcasing the value to both your business and your brand.
How to manage web projects without setting your hair on fireKathy Gill
It seems like everyone in the organization believes they know what makes a website "work" despite having no design training. Managers insist that "their" pages look or act in ways directly contrary to the rest of the website. Or the web.
What are the unique characteristics of the web that make managing design a challenge? How can we empower stakeholders while also creating a seamless user experience? And how would an iterative, collaborative design process facilitate a responsive web, one where sites work well on phones, tablets and desktops?

SharePointFest Konferenz 2016 - Creating a Great User Experience in SharePointMarc D Anderson
Building solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience (UX), which goes far beyond the technical aspects of the solution. It’s no longer good enough to meet the specifications. We must exceed them in terms of usability. This takes many developers out of their comfort zones and into the messy world of end users. In this interactive session, we’ll discuss questions like:* How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality?* Will they perceive that this functionality saves them work or creates new work?* How will the functionality compare to what they see on the consumer Web?* How can we use technologies which haven’t historically been considered mainstream SharePoint developer tools (like jQuery and CSS) to make SharePoint feel more like the sites people love? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself as well as specific customizations.

Usability: whats the use? Presented by We are Sigma and PRWDNexer Digital
For websites, good usability is a matter of survival. If a website is difficult to use, people leave. If the homepage fails to clearly state what a company offers and what users can do on the site, people leave. If users get lost on a website, they leave. For intranets and applications the question is one of productivity. In many organisations employees waste inordinate amounts of time searching for and assimilating the information they need to do their jobs. This lost time has a real, tangible value so ROI for designing internal systems with User Experience in mind, and spending some time testing and improving the usability of the system, is pretty compelling.
As people with a strong User Experience focus we don’t need to be convinced of the value of good usability, but for many companies who are thinking of revamping their site, intranet or portal it isn’t quite so clear cut.

With the rising popularity of working in more agile ways, we’ve been taught to move away from the big old projects of yore and focus instead on smaller, actionable outcomes. But what happens when you’re trying to achieve a massive vision of large-scale, long-term change; in this case working to get an entire sector to change its relationship with digital, technology, and collaboration? Real change and transformation can be extremely difficult, take a long time, and be a rocky road to tread.
In this case study-led talk I’ll tell the story of how I’ve been part of a team working to combat inactivity, spark innovation, and create a better online customer experience around sport and physical activity through open data. I’ll be speaking about the process of change, the balance between technology and people, lessons learned, and how these all relate to our work with the web. Using a series of practical demonstrations spanning data visualisation, neural networks, JAMstack web development, online tools like glitch.me, and Google Sheets as a data store I’ll also show how development skills can be a powerful tool within transformation projects.
You will leave armed with new practical tips and ideas, and hopefully inspired to make some positive change in the world.
Making the leap from execution to strategySally Lait
Talk given at The Lead Developer conference, London, June 2017.
Focusing on making websites is bread and butter for many, but what happens when you start to think beyond frameworks and APIs and into the realms of strategy? In this talk we’ll look at:
The different levels of focus that we can work at
Why you might want to begin to focus more strategically
The challenges that you might face on the way
Examples of how having a technical brain in more strategic activities can be beneficial.
Websites are a symptom, not the cause - DXN May 2017Sally Lait
Talk given at DXN (dxnevent.com) on the 10th May 2017.
As creators of the web, our teams aim to understand challenges, opportunities and requirements, and translate these into technical solutions to build. But what happens when we start looking beyond this, using the website itself as a starting point rather than as the end of our journey?
Websites are often a great barometer for wider underlying issues, and by exploring common problems and root causes we can seek to spark fundamental change that can ultimately feed back into our longer-term success. Using a set of practical examples and case studies we’ll pull at some potential threads of failure, looking at how to create more sustainably for the future.

With great power comes great (development) responsibilitySally Lait
Developers are often seem as mere implementors, when the reality is that their choices can have a huge impact on the overall success of projects - for good, or for bad. A user-centric design process is common in most projects, but in this talk we’ll cover how viewing usability and responsibility as part of development decisions is equally as important. We’ll travel through time from the beginning of the digital age, observing how a focus on users (or lack of) has helped to make or break the success of ideas. We’ll also consider how other industries apply similar principles, and how we can learn from them, finishing with some tips to apply to our builds.
More Than Media Queries - The Digital PondSally Lait
Talk given at The Digital Pond on August 7th 2014. The event theme was "Responding To The Responsive Web - Insights On Reshaping User Experience".
Talk summary:
Responsive projects are about more than just serving up the same site across different screen sizes. When we do our planning, we should think about using technology to enhance experiences. A big part of that is making choices for the right reasons, and with wider principles (such as responsibility) in mind.

In this talk we explore how the concept of 'mini hacks' - small, contained experiments, explorations and side projects - can help to keep our skills up to date and help us play with code that we may not otherwise get an opportunity to develop during our day jobs.
We discuss why such undertakings can be worthwhile, how you can fit them into your life, and go through some ideas for concepts and ways to get involved.

Digital Commerce Lecture for Advanced Digital & Social Media Strategy at UCLA...Valters Lauzums
E-commerce in 2024 is characterized by a dynamic blend of opportunities and significant challenges. Supply chain disruptions and inventory shortages are critical issues, leading to increased shipping delays and rising costs, which impact timely delivery and squeeze profit margins. Efficient logistics management is essential, yet it is often hampered by these external factors. Payment processing, while needing to ensure security and user convenience, grapples with preventing fraud and integrating diverse payment methods, adding another layer of complexity. Furthermore, fulfillment operations require a streamlined approach to handle volume spikes and maintain accuracy in order picking, packing, and shipping, all while meeting customers' heightened expectations for faster delivery times.
Amid these operational challenges, customer data has emerged as an important strategy. By focusing on personalization and enhancing customer experience from historical behavior, businesses can deliver improved website and brand experienced, better product recommendations, optimal promotions, and content to meet individual preferences. Better data analytics can also help in effectively creating marketing campaigns, improving customer retention, and driving product development and inventory management.
Innovative formats such as social commerce and live shopping are beginning to impact the digital commerce landscape, offering new ways to engage with customers and drive sales, and may provide opportunity for brands that have been priced out or seen a downturn with post-pandemic shopping behavior. Social commerce integrates shopping experiences directly into social media platforms, tapping into the massive user bases of these networks to increase reach and engagement. Live shopping, on the other hand, combines entertainment and real-time interaction, providing a dynamic platform for showcasing products and encouraging immediate purchases. These innovations not only enhance customer engagement but also provide valuable data for businesses to refine their strategies and deliver superior shopping experiences.
The e-commerce sector is evolving rapidly, and businesses that effectively manage operational challenges and implement innovative strategies are best positioned for long-term success.
13. As a new developer, I am easily swayed by the
opinions of people I respect, or at least view as more
experienced. This post was kicked off by a few back
and forth tweets on open source contributions. One
person stated that I don’t need to worry about
making open source contributions and I went “Yay,
cool, less pressure”, another seemed to state that I
am of little worth if I don’t contribute “Fuck, okay, I
guess I better get on that then”. I wish programmers
were more aware of the things they are saying and
the attitudes they express, and how that might
effect a young padawan like me.

17. Back in 2008 (when we started Bearded), one of our
differentiators was that we built every site on a
CMS. At the time, many agencies had not-
insignificant revenue streams derived from
updating their clients’ site content on their behalf.
!
But we didn’t want to do that work, and our clients
didn’t want to pay for it. Building their site on a CMS
and training them to use it was a natural solution. It
solved both of our problems, recurring revenue be
damned! It gave our clients power that they wanted
and needed.
