China has experienced rapid growth in internet and technology in recent decades. There are now nearly 400 million internet users in China, growing by 10 million per month, compared to 240 million users in the US. Social media and bulletin board systems (BBS) are very popular in China, with over 200 million bloggers and IM users. While social media sites are censored, BBS sites allow anonymous sharing of images, videos, and content and help information spread through word of mouth, linked to Chinese equivalents of Facebook and YouTube. Tencent is held up as an example of successfully monetizing social media. China's technological capabilities are advancing quickly and the country may soon surpass the Western world.
