Amitrole is a heterocyclic organic compound containing nitrogen atoms in a ring structure. It is used as a disinfectant in embalming fluids to destroy disease-causing microorganisms. Amitrole is also used as a herbicide to control weeds on non-food crops and aquatic weeds. While it effectively kills unwanted microbes and plants, Amitrole is acutely toxic, irritating, and suspected of being toxic to human reproduction and target organs or systems.
