Editor's Notes

  1. I want to start with a story-Beer Rep, Makeup Artist, highschool theatre nerd, communications major, traveler, crafter, cocktailer, foodie, event organizer, recruiter, writer, oh yeah, and marketer. These are all things I’ve described myself as over the past 20 or so years. In 2009 I was a marketing consultant, helping small businesses with social media, loyalty campaigns, events, in store activations and digital marketing, when I read a job description on Craigslist and it altered the course of my career, it was Yelp and they were launching in Canada. CM was new, I hadn’t heard about it, yet I had all of the skills they were looking for. Had I been accidently training for this my whole life? And since then, I’ve been spreading the word about Community Management to anyone who will listen.
  2. Make your events about your community, filled with memorable experiences and your community will tell the story of you for you. The magic is in it’s unbiased, advocate medium.
  3. Eventing on a shoestring budget. Getting your community involved. Share the social bites story-Balloons on helpers-photobooths-sharing – don’t neglect the power of twitter falls, hashtags, and instagram photo opps. You can work with companies like pixelbooth to create this.
  4. Marketing activations that don’t suck. Connect, be thoughtful, surprising, engaging**no more crappy booths. Do things that are engaging. Even if they are DIY. As are all of these.
  5. attract people to something fun, whimsical + surprisingcreate opportunities for genuine discussion give your audience a reason to share
