Humans vs. Westworld: A Cultural Science Approach

What does it mean to be human? What does technology have to do with that? And how do we know where “we” stop and the non-human world – natural and artificial – begins? These questions are ever more urgent as human action changes the natural environment, while human labour is increasingly automated. What will become of us when robots achieve consciousness? The answers seem to depend much more on culture than on technology; and popular speculative fiction seems to be well ahead of formal scholarship in thinking them through. Using a cultural science framework, this presentation looks at how the problem of the human is imagined in two current hit TV series – Westworld (USA) and Humans (UK). What is at stake in their very different answers to the same troubling questions?

and inter-breeding with tribes and making families and villages from beginning to

1. the borderlands: the both imaginary and embodied geography of the southwest
US and northern Mexico. Cf. Gloria Anzaldua. The "marginal" aspect for each side of
the border is re-imagined, so that "borderlands" refers to both the geographies and
the cultures which the border crosses. The experience of those marginalized, in this
conception, becomes central, especially in terms of gender. Then again, "queer
borderlands": cf. Cherrie Moraga; Anzaldua's borderlands re-thought specifically in
terms of [email protected] gender and sexuality in addition to class, ethnicities, nationalities.
2. Perez is emphasizing a gaze that is geographic, spatial, apparently fixed in space;
and yet also mobile, impermanent, changing.
3. drawing on Foucault: "the borderlands have been imprinted by bodies that
traverse the region, just as bodies have been transformed by the laws and customs
in the regions we call borderlands"; for Foucault, she writes, bodies are "engraved
and transformed through laws, customs, and moralities"; but he does not directly
address coloniality, in which Native Americans became the property of the
colonizing Spanish, for example.
4. Decolonial thought. She does not refer to Walter Mignolo, whose work on "de-
colonial studies" has been essential in differentiating the concerns of this field from
those of "post-colonial studies." The issue is that we are not simply "after"
colonization; we are still moving out of it.
5. She concentrates on an idea of "a decolonial imaginary." She thinks that this
category "can help us rethink history in a way that makes agency for those on the
margins transformative" (123).
6. For Perez, "the norm" is not simply a social construct that can be oppressive; it is
a colonial construct, a "colonial imaginary," part of the way that empires establish
themselves as "national" realities through symbolic systems. Even if we rebel
against these "norms," the ways in which we re-imagine history in more radical
ways means that they may depend on, and help re-invent, the colonial imaginaries
which more radical histories are intended to upset.

In this presentation, we analyse some of the aspect of media experimentation, taking the example of a laboratory for media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
After examining how media research consists in creating new imaginaries (visual or experiental depictions, situations) a.k.a the "future", we then examine how these created facts (fictum, narratives) are usually presented as new and believable (plausible) celebrating things to come and in the same time carry out themes or topics that are in fact part of a bigger, mythical techno-cosmogony.
We conclude by synthetising both our future arguments and fictive counter-arguments in the context of media response abilities when it comes to amplify story-bits in media systems (memetic resonance). We propose in particular to add contextual elements to the repetition of narrative arguments made by story professionnals and also to encourage creative reconfiguration of both memes and their context in a pragmatic, and free attitude, where narratives are not only embodied as stories-objects but also as tools for action, recreation and playful reconfiguration of socio-material practices.

This simulation will give you a deeper understanding of how these accusations occurred and how the element of fear is used to oppress and control people. I included two videos. 2. Your second assignment is to critique and analyze Hieronymus Bosch's famous painting, "The Garden of Earthly Delights." Bosch has been described as a painter of nightmares and has a way of tapping into our greatest fears and so this week we will discover just how much our fears today are still reflected in those painted by him hundreds of years ago. Not only will you become more familiar with his artwork but you will also gain a better understanding of interpreting symbols in art. All the information you will need for this is also in your Week 9 module. I have provided you with a lot of information, but please make sure you watch EITHER the video on Bosch OR the link for the slide tutorial on the middle panel of the Garden of Earthly Delights. This will help you complete the discussion this week.

The witch trials during the Reformation would become known as "the female holocaust," and as you learned in the documentaries, many villages were wiped clean of women. Between last week with the trial of Joan of Arc, and now the witch trials, we see how frightening it is to be misjudged and put on trial for something that you did not do. These medieval witch hunts were about fear, politics, religion, science and magic. But it's also about words and stories and just how powerful they can be. I think this is incredibly relevant today; not just with modern witch trials that are still happening to people all over the world; but also in the media; when fake news meant to instill panic and fear spreads like wildfire because we feed those flames, just like the flames that were used to execute women.

Abstract: I will examine the background of the language phylogeny in emerging Homo Sapiens as a fast, bipedal, long-distance runner in Black Africa, followed by language psychogenesis in children from their gestation twenty-fourth week onward. I will concentrate on the audio-visual machiness impact, Lacan’s mirror stage, AV machines, the discontinuity between real and virtual realities, the remote control and AI machines as smart speakers and smart homes. In addition, I will discuss the following questions: Is the Machine beyond human intelligence? Is the human individual beyond Homo Sapiens? Is the human community beyond social contract? My working hypotheses on education within phylogenetic psycholinguistics are built on the following topics: Tomorrow’s AI class (unit and room); guided self-learning and who is the guide; can transference and countertransference take place in AI-guided self-learning? Can a human subject develop such transference/countertransference with a machine? Can a machine “play the game”? In conclusion, I will debate “The utopian vision of an improved human being versus the dystopic vision of human beings and human communities totally enslaved to AI machines”.

Presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) in Cleveland, OH. November 2, 2011 during the Panel on Using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
In this presentation, we analyse some of the aspect of media experimentation, taking the example of a laboratory for media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
After examining how media research consists in creating new imaginaries (visual or experiental depictions, situations) a.k.a the "future", we then examine how these created facts (fictum, narratives) are usually presented as new and believable (plausible) celebrating things to come and in the same time carry out themes or topics that are in fact part of a bigger, mythical techno-cosmogony.
We conclude by synthetising both our future arguments and fictive counter-arguments in the context of media response abilities when it comes to amplify story-bits in media systems (memetic resonance). We propose in particular to add contextual elements to the repetition of narrative arguments made by story professionnals and also to encourage creative reconfiguration of both memes and their context in a pragmatic, and free attitude, where narratives are not only embodied as stories-objects but also as tools for action, recreation and playful reconfiguration of socio-material practices.

This simulation will give you a deeper understanding of how these accusations occurred and how the element of fear is used to oppress and control people. I included two videos. Bosch has been described as a painter of nightmares and has a way of tapping into our greatest fears and so this week we will discover just how much our fears today are still reflected in those painted by him hundreds of years ago. Not only will you become more familiar with his artwork but you will also gain a better understanding of interpreting symbols in art. All the information you will need for this is also in your Week 9 module. I have provided you with a lot of information, but please make sure you watch EITHER the video on Bosch OR the link for the slide tutorial on the middle panel of the Garden of Earthly Delights. This will help you complete the discussion this week.

The witch trials during the Reformation would become known as "the female holocaust," and as you learned in the documentaries, many villages were wiped clean of women. Between last week with the trial of Joan of Arc, and now the witch trials, we see how frightening it is to be misjudged and put on trial for something that you did not do. These medieval witch hunts were about fear, politics, religion, science and magic. But it's also about words and stories and just how powerful they can be. I think this is incredibly relevant today; not just with modern witch trials that are still happening to people all over the world; but also in the media; when fake news meant to instill panic and fear spreads like wildfire because we feed those flames, just like the flames that were used to execute women.

Abstract: I will examine the background of the language phylogeny in emerging Homo Sapiens as a fast, bipedal, long-distance runner in Black Africa, followed by language psychogenesis in children from their gestation twenty-fourth week onward. I will concentrate on the audio-visual machiness impact, Lacan’s mirror stage, AV machines, the discontinuity between real and virtual realities, the remote control and AI machines as smart speakers and smart homes. ABSTRACT
It is common to view any artificially created entity as an extension of our human faculties. So it was with our early understanding of the World Wide Web. In the initial years, the Web was viewed variously as a very large database, a digital library or even as an extension of our thoughts. In this talk, I will argue that, far from the Web being an extension of ourselves, *we* are individual appendages to a large emergent characteristic space created by the Web. This is called the "Socio-Cognitive Space". Much like the "economy" -- an entity created by us, which in turn affects our financial well being, the socio-cognitive space that is created by us in turn influences what we think and even how we feel. The socio-cognitive space can satiate our scientific curiosity or strengthen our cognitive biases, stroke our inner-most desires or make us deeply outraged, create wise crowds or unruly mobs, and create a livelihood or drive people to suicide.
The socio-cognitive space is immersive and specific in its influence. Two people from the same family could be affected very differently by the Web, depending on their own innate characteristics. We are only beginning to understand the impact of this very powerful space, which is only going to increase in the coming years. I will also argue that arguments that view the Web as a whole as a great opportunity or a great threat, are both inherently missing the essence of the socio-cognitive space. Instead, I will draw concepts from Eastern philosophy to view the space as a collective "state of being" characterized by different levels of harmony or disharmony.
Social networks are a class of information networks, where the unit of exchange (acquaintance, knowledge, attention) is in terms of information, rather than physical material. Information networks are characteristically different from material networks. While material networks are primarily about transfer of energy, information networks are driven by the need to model or represent underlying semantics. In this talk, we will first look contrast information and material networks. We will then look into different kinds of semantics that can be discerned from the way information elements have been connected.

Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

"felt obligation," examining 120 articles published between 1986 and 2024. The aim of the study is to deepen our
understanding of the existing knowledge in the field of "felt obligation" and to provide guidance for further
research. The analysis is centered around the authors, countries, institutions, and keywords of the articles. The
findings highlight prominent researchers in this field, leading universities, and influential journals. Particularly,
it is identified that China plays a leading role in "felt obligation" research. The analysis of keywords emphasizes
the thematic focuses of these studies and provides a roadmap for future research. Finally, various
recommendations are presented to deepen the knowledge in this area and promote applied research. This study
serves as a foundation to expand and advance the understanding of "felt obligation" in the field.
