This chapter discusses moral leadership and leadership courage. It explores how leaders can act ethically by focusing on principles like serving others, honesty, and fairness. Leaders set the ethical tone for their organizations and face pressures that challenge their ability to do what is right. The chapter also covers developing moral courage and examining one's own stage of moral development to become a better leader. Ideas like servant leadership that emphasize serving followers are presented as well.

Leadership books abound. Yet there are very few that put Values first before all those leadership skills. In this book, Harry Krammer explains the Four principles of Value-Based leadership and has shared his personal experiences to validate how these principles do work .
When Leaders engage in Self-reflection ( Principle # 1) followed by Balance, True-Self-confidence and Genuine Humility, then the organization has a much greater chance of leading the Values instead of with Egos. He also shares why positive core business ethics create greater shareholder value. One excellent point he discusses is the difference between what is legal and what is right.
Talent Management and leadership development are far more effective when approaching these two elements from a Values driven position. After all, organizations are all about people united to achieve those big, hairy audacious goals that would be fare ore difficult if not impossible to achieve individually.
Silo thinking is also viewed within the circle of Leadership. When this happens, my turf or silo becomes bigger than the organization’s big vision and this creates poor performance.
Another advantage to leading from a position of high ethics is motivation and team engagement. Teams do not come together naturally, but “ are developed purposefully and with intention”.
The end result from Values to Action is precisely that action or execution and implementation. Failed execution can more often than not be laid at the feet of leadership and not extenuating circumstances.
Values are not bullet points on a Corporate website or motivational phrases on a poster in a lunch room.. Some companies talk a good game and have plaques on the wall stating their Mission & Values, but their day-to-day actions tell a different story.

Great leaders know they wonu2019t always get it right, but they work with other experts, listen to their employees, keep learning, and set the intention to create a vibrant, healthy workplace and culture that embraces diversity. This requires tremendous courage and empathy but results in stronger, more innovative and resilient organizations more capable of attracting and keeping top talent.

Leaders have a myriad of tactics they can use to influence their followers. Some of these are more
emotional or mental methods that they use to affect the behavior of their followers; others are more
process-focused, which is a more systematic approach to motivation. Leaders will find that, in some
situations, one method works better than the other, and, at other times, they may find themselves leading
with both their head and their heart. Effective leaders will balance their use of hard tactics, such as
issuing direct orders with softer, more collaborative directions. It can be challenging to determine which
combination of methods will be most effective when trying to persuade followers to complete an objective
or comply with a request. This unit covers the personal side of leadership and the different tactics
leaders use to influence their followers. Emotional intelligence (EQ), ethical leadership, moral
development, and servant leadership are just a few of the leadership behaviors that will be covered.
In order for leaders to influence their followers and give them a sense of meaning and purpose, they must be

Creating an ethical organization requires that
leaders act based on moral principles. Leaders
are the symbols for the organization’s ethical
climate. When they excessively promote self-
interest, practice deception and breach
agreements, and lack the courage to confront
unjust acts, they hurt the organization and
everyone associated with it.
5. SUMMARY
Ethical leaders are humble, honest, and
straightforward. They maintain a concern for
the greater good, strive for fairness, and
demonstrate the courage to stand up for what
is right. Acting as a moral leader means
demonstrating the importance of serving
people and society as well as increasing profits
or personal gain.
One personal consideration for leaders is the
level of moral development. Leaders use an
understanding of the stages of moral
development to enhance their own as well as
followers’ moral growth. Leaders who operate
at higher stages of moral development focus

Ideas about control versus service between
leaders and followers are changing and
expanding, reflected in a continuum of leader–
follower relationships. The continuum varies
from authoritarian managers to participative

The final sections of the chapter discuss
leadership courage and how leaders can find
their own courage. Courage means having the

deceit and cheating are the norm,
then these adults will follow the
trend without question and if
honesty is the trend, will follow
that course too without question.
Such people cannot be moral
leaders because their own views
and principles are governed by
society, immediate family,
neighbors, and others.
This leaves them unable to make
independent decisions that require
courage and guts not only to break
away from a set convention but to
also back oneself against challenges
and obstacles in achieving goals.
Leaders can use an understanding of
these stages to enhance their
followers’ moral development and to
initiate ethics training programs to
move people to higher levels of
moral reasoning. When leaders
operate at level three of moral
development, they focus on higher
principles and encourage others to
think for themselves and expand
their understanding of moral issues.

evidence appearing real,” arises
not from a true threat but from
people’s own thoughts. This type
of fear might be better termed
anxiety. This reflects that many
fears are learned and prevent
people from doing what they
want. True leaders step through
these learned fears to accept
responsibility, take risks, make
changes, speak their minds, and
fight for what they believe.
In other words, it is also a
persecution complex that results
from unnecessary worrying
about a nonexistent issue. On
the other hand, “fear” is an
emotion that manifests itself as a
consequence of an actual event

punishment. Fear is a genuine
emotion and is the main reason
for the existence of courage.
