2. Skill sports require high levels of skill with
modest demands for muscular or energy
fitness.
Sports include:
◦ Golf, Table Tennis, bowling and Shooting sports
Training has been shown:
◦ to improve distance and consistency
◦ Allows more effective practice sessions
◦ Reduces over use injuries
See page 202-206 for sample golf program
3. Require a high level of muscular strength and
power
Sports include:
Football (linemen), weightlifting, track and field
(throwing events)
Anaerobic bouts with recovery periods
Max anaerobic bouts can lead to exhaustion
with out good aerobic base.
See sample Programs pages 207-211
4. Ability to do repetitions of forceful
contractions as quickly as possible or to
sustain a contraction.
Sports include:
◦ Wrestling, down hill skiing, middle distance running
Short duration anaerobic with recovery
See pages 212-216 for sample programs
5. Sports include: soccer, basketball, field
hockey, lacrosse.
Muscular fitness is required to maximize
power and speed, and to with stand contact
from opponents.
Strong aerobic foundation to maintain
continuous motion and recover quickly from
anaerobic bursts.
See page 217-221 for sample programs.
6. Sports included: distance running, cycling,
cross country skiing
Events lasting more than 15 mins.
Training should emphasize race-pace
training in the performance zone (PZ)
Some Anaerobic work to build speed
Easy training Zone to develop endurance and
metabolic efficency.
Muscular Fitness – to build power and
endurance, not strength
See page 222-226 for sample programs
