Challenge by Choice is a three-tiered instructional system where students determine their own level of mastery and depth of learning. The levels - green, blue, and black - correspond to beginner, intermediate, and advanced slopes, similar to skiing levels. Students are expected to prove proficiency at all levels to meet standards, but can choose any level and change levels as needed. Teachers identify core concepts, proficiency standards, and higher-order thinking extensions for students to choose their challenge level following whole-group lessons. Students then select their level for tiered assessments to demonstrate their learning.
