The Southern Colonies consisted of large tobacco and rice plantations along the coast, in contrast to the backcountry settlements of hunters and farmers. The Mason-Dixon Line divided the Middle Colonies from the Southern Colonies. Maryland was founded by Cecil Calvert and provided religious freedom for Christians. Virginia's main crop was tobacco and Bacon's Rebellion was led by Nathaniel Bacon. North and South Carolina's northern settlers had small tobacco farms while southern settlers were English nobles. Cash crops included cotton, tobacco, rice and indigo. By 1700, slaves made up the majority of populations in Georgia and South Carolina.
