The character of Mortimer Cropper also reflects this theme of
possession in his powerful desire to possess objects
connected to Ash and any knowledge about the poet. Cropper
tells Blackadder: “I intend to have those letters if I can[…]And I
intend to find out the rest[…] What became of their child.
What they concealed from us. I intend to know.”
4. What is good about this extract?
The character of Mortimer Cropper also reflects this theme of
possession in his powerful desire to possess objects
connected to Ash and any knowledge about the poet. Cropper
tells Blackadder: “I intend to have those letters if I can[…]And I
intend to find out the rest[…] What became of their child.
What they concealed from us. I intend to know.” At first
Cropper sounds uncertain, using the qualifying statement “if I
can” but as his speech continues he becomes more adamant,
the repetition of “I intend” emphasises his certainty and the
final italics suggest the importance of his need to possess
knowledge. The structure of this speech is interesting in that
the sentences become shorter and simpler, building up to a
climax and suggesting perhaps that Cropper is driven or
possessed by the need to know what happened.
