The EkoSkola Programme was launched in Malta in 2002-2003 as a pilot project to establish an organizational framework to run the program nationally. It has since expanded, with additional sponsors and teachers appointed. The program costs approximately 120,000 euros annually to run. It aims to support schools through the production of materials, staff training, and promoting the program. Schools are guided through the seven steps of the process and are evaluated based on following all steps rather than the number of environmental activities conducted. Networking between schools and ensuring the program changes how schools function are ongoing challenges.
