Colonization involves one group taking control of another's land, often through oppression, enslavement, and killing of indigenous peoples. Historically, Europeans and Americans were large colonizers in this way, but other countries also engaged in colonialism, such as China over Tibet, Indonesia over West Papua, and Russia's attempted colonization of Afghanistan. The colonized typically adopt the language and religion of their colonizers, and globalization has further spread Western culture worldwide at the cost of losing many traditional societies.
