Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2. How do certificates work?
• In order to protect children from harmful and
unsuitable in films and videos and to provide
viewers with information they might need about
the film they are wishing to see, the BBFC
examines and age rates films before they are
released to the general public. Typically there will
be two examiners that will view a film before its
release and they will then review it and give their
opinions of what certificate; then a senior
examiner will either approve their opinion or
decide on what they believe is more suitable for
the film. Doing this then gives the film the
authority to be released to the public.
4. What does U mean?
• U stands for universal and is aimed at viewers
aged four and above. Although it can be
impossible to predict what and how every
individual will react to the movie of this rating.
5. What does PG mean?
• PG stands for Parental Guidance, this means
the film is suitable for general viewing,
however some scenes might not be suitable
for young children.
6. What does 12A/12 mean?
• Films classified as 12A or 12 are certificated
that because the content of the film is not
suitable for children under 12. Anyone
younger than 12 years old should not see the
movie without parental supervision.
7. What does 15 mean?
• Films with a rating of 15; anyone under the
age of 15 are not permitted permission to
watch or rent content of this rating.
8. What does 18 mean?
• Films rated 18 are meant to be for adults eyes
only, no one under the age of 18 is allowed to
watch an 18 in the cinema or buy/rent an 18
rated video/film.
9. What does R18 mean?
• The R18 category is a special and legally-
restricted classification, all because of the
explicit works of consenting sex or strong
fetish material involving adults.
• These rated movies are only shown in
specially licensed cinemas and are never
supplied by mail order.

cleavage and mention of pregnancy.
• Violence is thrust upon the characters, for
example a gun gets pointed and there are
some slammed doors.

16. In conclusion
To conclude the certifications for Period
Drama’s, the majority of the examples that I
looked at where given the certification of 12A
and this is because of the fact that although
there is mild nudity and profanity used
throughout them, there is not enough to class it
as a 15. However even though it’s certified as a
12, they still need their parents with them which
concludes why there is the A.
