Kenny Chang (張任伯) (Storage Solution Architect, Intel) With the trend that Solid State Drive (SSD) becomes more affordable, more and more cloud providers are trying to provide high performance, highly reliable storage for their customers with SSDs. Ceph is becoming one of most open source scale-out storage solutions in worldwide market. More and more customers have strong demands that using SSD in Ceph to build high performance storage solutions for their Openstack clouds. The disrupted Intel® Optane SSDs based on 3D Xpoint technology fills the performance gap between DRAM and NAND based SSD while the Intel® 3D NAND TLC is reducing cost gap between SSD and traditional spindle hard drive and makes it possible for all flash storage. In this session, we will 1) Discuss OpenStack storage Ceph reference design on the first Intel Optane (3D Xpoint) and P4500 TLC NAND based all-flash Ceph cluster, it delivers multi-million IOPS with extremely low latency as well as increase storage density with competitive dollar-per-gigabyte costs 2) Share Ceph bluestore tunings and optimizations, latency analysis, TCO model, IOPS/TB, IOPS/$ based on the reference architecture to demonstrate this high performance, cost effective solution.

Slides for my talk at All Things Open 2014 OpenStack is widely recognized as a leading open source cloud computing platform and has attracted plenty of attention from developers, end users, IT companies, and media. As OpenStack continue to gain adoption, the audience of potential users continues to expand. Whether you’re building a public cloud service or private clouds for e-commerce, video/collaboration apps, sceintific research, NFV, or are simply looking for a more elastic model of infrastructure, OpenStack is an option to consider. This talk will serve as an extensive introduction for newcomers to OpenStack. We’ll discuss both the software itself and the makeup of the community of developers and users around it. We’ll learn how to contribute to OpenStack, who’s using it today, different deployment scenarios and use cases, and provide both online and local resources for learning more. We’ll also provide an introduction to incubated components, underpinning pieces, and pointers to installers and service providers who can help you get started.

Many organizations are embracing cloud-native technologies, such as microservices, containers, and Kubernetes, but are struggling to adapt their developer experience (DevEx or DX) and continuous delivery processes. Failure to adapt leads to longer lead times for delivery, frustration for developers, and stability issues in production. Architects and technical leaders need to drive this change. The developer experience with modern cloud-native technologies is very different than the classic enterprise experience of the 1990s or even the early cloud experiences of the 2000s. For example, it’s often no longer possible to spin up an entire application or system on local hardware, and the extra layers of abstract of containers and VMs make debugging and observing systems more challenging. Daniel Bryant explores the core concepts of the cloud-native developer experience, introduces and compares several useful tools, and shares lessons learned from the trenches.

The proper sizing of compute resources within OpenStack allows for easier scheduling, optimal efficiency in hardware utilization, and consistency of resource allocation. Building a GPU-enabled OpenStack Cloud for HPC - Blair Bethwaite, Monash Univ...

Audience Level Intermediate Synopsis M3 is the latest generation system of the MASSIVE project, an HPC facility specializing in characterization science (imaging and visualization). Using OpenStack as the compute provisioning layer, M3 is a hybrid HPC/cloud system, custom-integrated by Monash’s R@CMon Research Cloud team. Built to support Monash University’s next-gen high-throughput instrument processing requirements, M3 is half-half GPU-accelerated and CPU-only. We’ll discuss the design and tech used to build this innovative platform as well as detailing approaches and challenges to building GPU-enabled and HPC clouds. We’ll also discuss some of the software and processing pipelines that this system supports and highlight the importance of tuning for these workloads. Speaker Bio Blair Bethwaite: Blair has worked in distributed computing at Monash University for 10 years, with OpenStack for half of that. Having served as team lead, architect, administrator, user, researcher, and occasional hacker, Blair’s unique perspective as a science power-user, developer, and system architect has helped guide the evolution of the research computing engine central to Monash’s 21st Century Microscope. Lance Wilson: Lance is a mechanical engineer, who has been making tools to break things for the last 20 years. His career has moved through a number of engineering subdisciplines from manufacturing to bioengineering. Building accurate machine learning models has been an art of data scientists, i.e., algorithm selection, hyper parameter tuning, feature selection and so on. Recently, challenges to breakthrough this “black-arts” have got started. We have developed a Spark-based automatic predictive modeling system. The system automatically searches the best algorithm, the best parameters and the best features without any manual work. In this talk, we will share how the automation system is designed to exploit attractive advantages of Spark. Our evaluation with real open data demonstrates that our system could explore hundreds of predictive models and discovers the highly-accurate predictive model in minutes on a Ultra High Density Server, which employs 272 CPU cores, 2TB memory and 17TB SSD in 3U chassis. We will also share open challenges to learn such a massive amount of models on Spark, particularly from reliability and stability standpoints.

Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.
