This document discusses several organizations and their approaches to censorship and controversial content. It categorizes each organization as either "Controversial" or "Conservative" based on their stances. ACLU Controversial
They have a blog titled "Speak Freely." This as well asthe
number of articles dealing with the First Amendment and
advocating for free expression led me to believe that they would
be for inclusion of controversial books. It was also a helpful site
in that you could find your local ACLU affiliate and sign up for
updates.
American Family
Association
Conservative
This is a religious site that aims to "give aid to the church" and
follows the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is what led me to think
that it would take a more conservative approach to book
inclusion. It does inform interested parties in how to contact
their state officials if they feel that they have encountered a
problem. However, it is fairly exclusionary in that it emphasizes
the belief in Christianity and includes no other religious groups.
ALA Office for
Intellectual
Freedom
Controversial
This site promotes free access to libraries and even provides
aids to those libraries facing book challenges. Their support of
those facing challenges means that they would be more prone to
include controversial topics and materials. There are a number
of sources here for librarianslooking for advice on how to
proceed when faced with a challenge.
Eagle Forum Conservative
This site is listed as being part of a "Pro-Family Movement." It
is a more conservative political and social group and as such
would be more conservative in inclusion of materials. One thing
that stood out to me was that they had a section opposing
Common Core, but had no readily apparent reason as to why.
Electronic Frontier
Foundation
Controversial
This site is for fighting against challenges to digital sources.
Therefore it is for including more controversial sources.
However, it only covers digital ones. They also are actively
taking on legal cases in regards to challenges against digital
material.
Focus on the
Family
Conservative
This is another religious-based site that is more conservative in
its approach. It mentions a number of religious and conservative
morals that its objective is to promote. While the other sites
focus more on political actions and news stories, this site does
include social and life issues that they provide advice on. There
is more a counseling and self-help feel to this site than the other
conservative websites.
National Coalition
Against
Censorship
Controversial
This organization's stance on controversial topics is apparent
in its title. However, there is even a section where they directly
discuss book banning and it is still a relevant topic that needs to
be fought against today. This is a well organized site that
provides a number of resources for a variety of groups,
especially including a section for resources for teachers and
students.
People for the
American Way
Controversial
The mission of this organization states that it is to promote the
American freedoms, including free speech, equally for all
citizens. There is even a section that directly addresses book
banning and challenging books under their section on freedom of
speech. I especially like that they have different sections based
on the different freedoms that they work to ensure for everyone.

Controversial Versus Conservative Approaches
PABBIS Conservative
This site tells parents who may object to a certain controversial
book how to proceed and react to that material. At first glance I
thought that this was a satirical site. The suggestions of how to
react as well as referring to materials as "bad books" seemed so
outrageous that I thought it was in jest at first. However, as the
reader continues it becomes evident that this is actual advice for
people who take a more conservative approach to materials. It is
also not a very well-designed site as it is a single page written in
list format.
Parents Protecting
the Minds of
Children
Conservative
This site is clearly for a more conservative approach to
inclusion as it contains a variety of lists of books that they feel
should not be included, as well asa number to call if you as a
parent find more materialsin your local schools that you want
removed as well. Some of their wording is a bit inflammatory.
They refer to a number of sex education books as pornographic.
This was a bit shocking to me, which was I assume the intent
behind using such language.
