In this paper we present STS (South Tyrol Suggests), a context-aware mobile recommender system for places of interest (POIs) that integrates some innovative components, including: a personality questionnaire, i.e., a brief and entertaining questionnaire used by the system to learn users’ personality; an active learning module that acquires ratings-in-context for POIs that users are likely to have experienced; and a matrix factorization based recommendation module that leverages the personality information and several contextual factors in order to generate more relevant recommendations. Adopting a system oriented perspective, we describe the assessment of the combination of the implemented components. We focus on usability aspects and report the end-user assessment of STS. It was obtained from a controlled live user study as well as from the log data produced by a larger sample of users that have freely downloaded and tried STS through Google Play Store. The result of the assessment showed that the overall usability of the system falls between “good” and “excellent”, it helped us to identify potential problems and it provided valuable indications for future system improvement.

Our lives, nowadays, are digital. We, as humans, are using software applications in all our life aspects to meet our daily objectives and fulfill our needs. Software solutions that comprise mobile apps are widely spread, users can select from hundreds of available software solutions that fit their needs. Accordingly, user needs are becoming intricate and the software organizations are competing high to satisfy user requirements and the desires for better quality. This competition is not about satisfying the functional requirements but also satisfy user experience as well. Accordingly, studying, measuring, and improving user experience is crucial for the success of any software product. This research focuses on evaluating user experience needs by developing user experience needs evaluation method based on three main disciplines the user experience framework, the evaluation theory concept, and the ISOsoftware quality standards ISO/IEC 25022 and ISO/IEC 25023. Although these disciplines are available in the literature, they are not linked together to complete the mosaic picture of developing a UX evaluation method. Linking there three disciplines led to systematically identify the necessary evaluation criteria to evaluate user needs experience.

A Mobile Audio Server enhanced with Semantic Personalization Capabilities

This paper presents a mobile audio server enhanced with personalization capabilities. The server as well as the client is implemented over the Android platform. It provides mobility to the system’s parts. The metadata which support personalization are separated into two categories: the metadata describing user preferences stored at each client and the resource adaptation metadata stored at the server. The multimedia models MPEG-21 and MPEG-7 are used to describe metadata information. The Web Ontology Language (OWL) is used to produce and manipulate the relative semantic descriptions about the metadata. The mobile server promotes audio tracks to the clients according to their preferences.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM). Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
