Chloroplasts are the green material inside plant cells that allows them to photosynthesize. Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles found in animal and plant cells that generate energy through cellular respiration. Both chloroplasts and mitochondria contain their own DNA and ribosomes, and are believed to have originated as ancient bacteria that became permanently incorporated into eukaryotic cells through endosymbiosis.
