Cell
Division
Learning Objective
1. Define cell division
2. Compare mitosis and
meiosis.
Tell me what you know?
CELL DIVISION
• Process by which cell reproduce
MITOSIS
• It is a type of cell division which occurs in somatic cells producing 2
diploid daughter cells.
MEIOSIS
• A cell division that occurs in the sex cells leading to the formation of
gametes
GAMETES
• Sex cells; sperm (male)and egg cell(female)

Cell Division
Process by which cell reproduce
It is where chromosomes become condensed or
thickened
2 Types of Cell Division
1. Mitosis
2. Meiosis
MITOSIS
4 Stages in
Mitosis
(PMAT) INTERPHASE is
the preparation
phase
for mitosis and
it is also the
longest phase in
the cell cycle. It
takes place in
the cytoplasm a
nd the
cell nucleus
MITOSIS
Cytokinesis
The division of the
cytoplasm to form
2 separate
daughter cells
immediately after
mitosis.
MITOSIS
It is a type of cell division which occurs in somatic cells producing 2
diploid daughter cells.
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes and nucleolus disappears
Nuclear membrane disappears ; spindle fibers also formed ;
chromosomes aligned at the center
Chromosomes breaks/separates towards opposite poles ; liberates the
sister chromatids
The new nuclear forms; spindles fibers disappear ; there is cytokinesis
or division of cytoplasm to form 2 separate daughter cells
It is the preparation phase for mitosis and it is also the
longest phase in the cell cycle. The interphase takes place
in the cytoplasm and the cell nucleus.
Interphase
MEIOSIS
Came from the greek word means “to make smaller”
The chromosomes reduces in half
Takes place in plants and animals whenever gametes or sex cells
are formed through process of gametogenesis
It is a special type of cell division where it undergoes 2 rounds of
cell division to produce 4 daughter cells
Importance of Cell Division
Reproduction Growth
repair and
replacement

Meiosis
It is a special type of cell division (gametes/sex /cells) where it undergoes 2
2 rounds of cell division to produce 4 daughter cells.
