Cell division occurs through two main processes: mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells from one parent cell and occurs in most body cells for growth and repair. Meiosis occurs only in sex glands and produces gametes like sperm and eggs, which have half the normal number of chromosomes to allow fertilization and restoration of the normal chromosome number.
