Roles in Commissioning
 Director:
This individual is generally in control of the entire operation,
controlling Internal commissioning processes

information relevant to project, writers and other personnel

commissioning operation.
Questions?
The Role of the Writer
The role of the writer is to successfully write a script for
a film, TV programme, or game that can be given to
a director, producer or actor, who will then use it in
the pre-production of the film.
If it is needed, then the film script can be requested to
be changed by a director, producer or actor and the
writer would then have to modify the script to meet
requirements.
Essential Knowledge for a Writer
 Accomplishments in Pre-Production: The most essential points in creating a story/script
are to create the characters necessary, set the scene(decide the location it will be set in)
and finally create a storyline that the character will follow.
 Target Audience: For a Writer, having a target audience is key, as this will help determine
what kind of book/film you will be working on.
 Relationship Between Director and Producer: Take this into account, the Producer and
Director only work with one another because they have to, not because they want to. Their
relationship is based around teamwork and mutual beneficence but their opinions and
views can differ greatly. Therefore they will work together only to better the script in such a
way that both parties are satisfied with the results.
 Drafting and Re-Writing: When creating a script, trial and error will be a writers best
friends. A basic version of the script or maybe an overly detailed version of the script can
be primarily created as a draft to give a rough gist of the plot to the director and then later
be refined into a masterpiece through re-writing. Also if the script needs to be tweaked
even a little bit after re-submission, the director/producer may ask for re-writes until the
script is perfect.
 Page Lock Down: This is the when your script has been handed in for the final time and
cannot be modified anymore, hence the “Lock Down”.
Becoming a Writer
 Skill set: To become a writer, you do NOT require any
prerequisite formal qualifications.
-You do need a good understanding of English: This is
very important as publishers need your work to be as
error free as possible.
-It is important to make your work clear and concise as it
should instill a sense of confidence your readers and give
less hassle when the publishers are processing your
work.
 Having a good understanding of grammar, spelling,
punctuation and Syntax is also very important
More Essential knowledge for a
Writer
 Why might you need an Agent and what is their role?
A literary Agent can be essential to a writer as they can
assist with finding the most appropriate deal for the script
and also give other relevant advice for the script
 Royalty Payments A
royalty payment is essentially the money you gain (after
the script is bought and published) from the total number
of products (books/films) sold
 A professional Script should be written in Typewriter Style
font with appropriate spacing, margins and titles.
More Question?
Legal and Ethical
Consideration
 Copyright:
The exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed
number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic,
or musical material.
 Censorship:
Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or
other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful,
sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by
governments, media outlets, authorities or other such entities.
 Watersheds:
The point in time when programmes with adult content are being
broadcasted
 Plagiarism:
The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them
off as one's own.
