This document analyzes and summarizes the cover art of three different albums/singles:
1) Gabrielle Aplin's album "English Rain" features the artist in a floaty yellow dress on a beach with an umbrella, suggesting freedom and that her appearance is not the focus.
2) Nina Nesbitt's EP "The Apple Tree" uses vibrant red and green colors and depicts Nesbitt holding a bitten apple, seemingly referencing the story of Snow White.
3) Marina and the Diamonds' single "How to be a Heartbreaker" presents the artist in heavy makeup with a small black heart on her cheek, cohesively representing the song's
2. This is Gabrielle Aplin CD which is called ‘English rain’. The
colours on the front cover are black and white except the
umbrella and Gabrielle which is shown in colour. This
suggest that the umbrella and her should stand out and
be noticed at first glance. The umbrella works cohesively
with the name of the album ‘English Rain’.
The
background is simple which just shows the sand, sea and
sky. This front cover has a landscape background which
suggests freedom and liberation. It also suggests that the
image of the artist is not the most important thing as she
is in the background and is not even facing front on. The
type of clothing that she is wearing is a floaty yellow
dress. The colour yellow is a pastel colour which is a
stereotypically a girly colour. The floaty dress also
represents a more relaxed outfit which is effortlessly
glamorous. The hair is down which means it is not heavily
stylised and portrays more of a natural hairstyle/look. The
bare legs and bare feet suggest that she is free and means
the outfit that she wears is not important to the album.
The image of the artist is nearer the background instead
of typical pop/folk cover which has a close up image of
the artist. This also suggests that the image of the artist is
not the main aspect for her target audience. It shows they
don’t rely on her appearance to sell the music to them.
The front cover is very minimalistic as it includes only two
lines of text the artists name and the name of the album
this gives it a professional look.
3. This is Nina Nesbitt EP named ‘The Apple Tree’. The
colours on this cover are very vibrant and bold. The
background consists of the red rosy apples and the
bright green leaves of the tree. Nina is wearing a
bright bold red jumper this therefore matches the
colour of the red apples and is pleasing to the eye.
The connotation of red is either love or danger this
could give an idea to what the songs are about on
this EP. Nina is stylized with quite heavy make up.
For example the thick black eye line is used to stand
out on her pale face. The red lips are used to stand
out with the apples and the jumper. The hair is
stylized as big and back combed and comes down
messy onto her jumper. This could mean she is not
an artist that has to have ‘perfect’ hair. By looking
at this cover in more detail I believe this has
something to do with the Disney character Snow
white. I have assumed this because of the pale
white foundation she is wearing and the rosy red
apple in her hand. There is one bite out of the apple
which shows she has eaten some and then the
expression on her face is with her eyes closed
which could mean she is sleeping. This then would
link in with the disney story of Snow White as in the
film she eats the poisoned apple and then falls
asleep. The album cover works cohesively with the
with the name of the album which is ‘The apple
tree’ as there is apples pictured on the cover.
4. This is Marina and the Diamonds single cover for ‘How
to be a heart breaker’. The colours on this cover follow
a very pastel pallet including colours such as, baby pink,
white, dark pink, pale orange. These types of colours
gives the cover a feminine look and implies the songs
are more aimed to a female audience. The Title of the
song is called ‘How to be a heartbreaker’ this works
cohesively with the close up image of her. Which
indicates she is the ‘heartbreaker’. The make up she is
wearing is quite heavy causing it to stand out and it
make’s her look more glamorous and dolled up. The
eyeliner is very thick on her eyelids and is the same
colour as her eyebrows. The dark eyes contrast with the
baby pink lipstick colour on her lips. This is used to keep
the image looking girly and feminine. Her hair is
scraped back from her face and has a slight wave in it.
This shows that you should give more attention to her
face instead of her hair as It is not as important In the
image. The colour of her hair is black/dark brown this
matches the colour of her eyebrows and eyeliner. On
her right cheek there is a small black heart. This the
artist trademark as she always wears that symbol on
her cheek. It stands out on her face because the heart is
black and her foundation is a very pale white colour.
The Text on the cover is very minimalistic as it only tells
us the name of the artist and the name of the single.
The colour of the text is a light pink colour this matches
the theme of the feminine look to the cover. It also
stands out next to her dark hair and dark heavy make
up.
