Phyllis Wheatley was an intelligent African American woman who wrote her first poem at age 13 and published her first book of poetry in 1774. She was one of America's most profound early writers and contributed greatly to American literature as one of the first African American women published. Wheatley used Christianity, Classicism, and solar worship in her poetry to make it meaningful. Over a third of her poems were elegies and the rest covered religious, classical, and abstract themes without often mentioning her own situation. Her poetry proved she had an intellect equal to or greater than many of her contemporaries and was written with a controlled style within rigid boundaries.
