Endangered Species

2. ๏จ Endangered Species are those species which
are less in their population and after some
years it may be extinct.
๏จ According to International Union of
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources
(IUCN), endangered species is the second most
severe conservation status for wild population.
4. ๏จ Rarity - When there are few animals of a
species left there are less available mates.
๏จ Inbreeding โ When animals mate too much
within their own group the offspring become
less able to survive and adapt in a healthy way.
๏จ Hybridization โ When two animals from
different sub-species mate they might pass on
genes that are less healthy.
๏จ Gradual loss of habitat โ When an animalโs
habitat is slowly destroyed and they have
nowhere to live.
5. ๏จ Catastrophe โ Volcanic eruption, dramatic
change in climate, tsunami, etc.
๏จ Competition โ When a new species is
introduced to a habitat, then the stronger of the
two species will be more likely to survive.
๏จ Disease โ If a particular sickness spreads
quickly throughout a particular species, then
many may die before they can reproduce.
๏จ Hunting and Collecting โ Hunters have been
largely responsible for the endangerement of
many animal species.
6. ๏จ They help to maintain the ecological balance.
๏จ They have medicinal value.
๏จ Some of the species protect our agricultural
crops by eating the pest.
๏จ They also form the basis of income of intensive
tourism industry.
7. ๏จ Protecting their natural habitat.
๏จ Establishing protected areas like National Park,
Wildlife Sanctuary and Biosphere Reserve.
๏จ Implementing Wildlife Protection Act.
๏จ In India, there are 90 National Parks, 492
Wildlife Sanctuaries and 13 Biosphere Reserve.
๏จ And Wildlife Protection Act was passed in
1972.
