Professor Lindsey Davies, National Director of Pandemic Influenza Preparedness, on the
H1N1v in the United Kingdom at the CBI swine flu seminar. September 2009.
An outbreak of varicella occurred at a hospital affecting patients and staff. Initial cases included two pediatric patients presenting with rash at the ER. Additional cases soon followed including an intern, resident, fellow and physical therapist exposed to the initial cases. Contact tracing identified over 30 exposed or potentially exposed individuals. An investigation was launched following standardized steps including confirming the diagnosis, establishing case definitions, formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with additional epidemiological data, recommending control measures and announcing results. Control measures included isolation, vaccination, work restrictions and surveillance to interrupt transmission and protect susceptible individuals.
This document provides a summary of a continuing medical education event on COVID-19 cases in primary care. It includes three patient case studies - a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with COVID-19 who was monitored with pulse oximetry, a 51-year-old man hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia who later developed a hydropneumothorax, and an almost 3-month old infant who tested positive for COVID-19 along with their mother. It also discusses pediatric COVID-19 cases and protocols for monitoring COVID-19 patients at the community health center using pulse oximetry. Resources on COVID-19 from various organizations are also listed.

A cost-benefit study of vaccination compares the costs of vaccination to the costs of no vaccination. Direct costs include medical costs, while indirect costs include costs of absenteeism from work or school. Several studies show reductions in absenteeism and influenza-like illness of 35-60% with vaccination, leading to direct savings per year of $1177-2236 per vaccinated person. Vaccination reduces costs from prevented sickness and is therefore considered a cost-effective preventive tool against communicable diseases.

The document discusses the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. It provides details on the virus, symptoms, transmission, management and treatment recommendations, and control measures. As of December 2009, over 9,500 deaths had been reported worldwide from the H1N1 virus. While the overall global mortality rate was approximately 1%, continued virus transmission was observed across many regions. Vaccines and antiviral medications such as oseltamivir were the primary interventions recommended for treatment and prevention.
Dr. Anna Garner presented on updates in HIV and STIs. Key points included:
1) Late HIV diagnosis remains an issue in the UK, with many patients presenting only after developing AIDS-related illnesses. Missed opportunities for earlier testing contribute to late diagnoses.
2) STIs such as LGV have seen resurgences in certain populations. Ocular syphilis can also present an atypical symptom of syphilis infection.
3) Increased HIV and STI testing is needed in high prevalence areas. All healthcare providers should consider HIV in their differential and offer testing when appropriate to diagnose more patients earlier.
The document discusses the role of general practitioners (GPs) in preventing tick-borne meningoencephalitis. It notes that tick-borne diseases are endemic in Slovenia, with 153-532 new cases per year. While there is no specific treatment, vaccination can be effective. However, Slovenia's vaccination rate is only 10%, much lower than Austria's rate of 86-90%. The document argues that GPs can play an important role in prevention through advising on and offering immunization to patients. It concludes that GPs need to understand vaccination schedules and keep accurate immunization records.

This document outlines the management of opportunistic diseases that commonly affect people living with HIV/AIDS. It discusses respiratory diseases like pneumonia, Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), and lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis (LIP). It also covers opportunistic infections of the gastrointestinal system and nervous system. For respiratory diseases, it provides details on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. It presents a case study of a child with cough and discusses possible causes and management approaches.
This document provides an outline and instructions for an education session on hand hygiene for trainers, observers, and healthcare workers. The session aims to raise awareness of key hand hygiene messages and teach the WHO guidelines. It will cover topics like the impact of healthcare-associated infections, transmission risks, and the WHO's hand hygiene implementation strategy. Practical sessions are recommended to demonstrate hand hygiene procedures during patient care.
This document discusses the development of syndromic practice guidelines for primary care in high HIV prevalence settings. It argues that standardized case management can improve diagnosis, treatment, and referral. Common outpatient conditions like respiratory infections, malaria, and STIs represent a large portion of health service visits. While disease presentations in early stage HIV may not differ from non-infected individuals, adequate management of selected conditions can reduce mortality and improve quality of life for those with HIV. Further research is still needed on treating certain conditions like pneumonia to help develop standardized syndromic guidelines.
Influenza - History, Vaccination, and Public HealthLouise O' Flynn
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Major influenza pandemics in the early 20th century like the 1918 Spanish Flu killed millions worldwide. Influenza outbreaks have occurred regularly in Ireland since the early 1900s. Public health measures to control influenza transmission have included vaccination programs and the wearing of masks. Monitoring of influenza is conducted through surveillance systems. Public policies aim to increase vaccination rates through health education campaigns.
This document discusses the management of the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. It summarizes experiences from the Southern Hemisphere, published case studies, and local cases. Key points include: most severe cases are in younger populations; prolonged mechanical ventilation is often required; antiviral treatment should begin within 48 hours for best effect. The document also covers infection control, triage protocols if resources are overwhelmed, and the need for pandemic preparedness and palliative care.
This document summarizes information about the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic presented by Professor Jim Bishop. It provides an overview of the epidemiology and severity of the 2009 H1N1 virus, its impact on transplant recipients, and the current global situation. Some key points are that the 2009 H1N1 virus resulted in over 37,000 cases and 191 deaths in Australia, with higher rates of hospitalization and ICU admission compared to seasonal influenza. It also resulted in significant illness in transplant recipients, though antiviral treatment reduced complications. Currently, influenza activity is low in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
This document provides an overview of tuberculosis (TB). It discusses that TB infects around 9 million people and causes 1.5 million deaths annually, making it a major global health problem. Key topics covered include the causative agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis; epidemiology of TB including increasing rates of drug-resistant and HIV-associated TB; risk factors; clinical presentation; diagnosis using smear microscopy, culture, radiography and other tests; treatment of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB; prevention through contact investigation and vaccination; and challenges to eliminating TB. The presentation emphasizes the continued burden of TB worldwide despite available diagnostic tools and treatments.
The document discusses strategies for preventing perinatal infections. It reviews major bacterial and viral infections, risk factors, diagnostic and treatment approaches, and examples of effective prevention measures. Key prevention strategies include prenatal screening and treatment, vaccination programs, and guidelines for managing at-risk pregnancies and deliveries. National recommendations and monitoring have significantly reduced rates of certain infections.
Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for children under 5 years old presenting with symptoms of the common cold at PIMS Islamabad, despite antibiotics not being effective for treating viral infections like the common cold. The study found that antibiotics were prescribed in 70% of cases. Common combinations included antibiotics with antipyretics and antihistamines. Only penicillin was prescribed as the antibiotic class. Many prescriptions contained multiple unnecessary drugs. Overprescribing antibiotics can contribute to rising antibiotic resistance.

Latent Tuberculosis: Identification and Treatmentacatanzaro
This document discusses screening and treatment guidelines for latent tuberculosis (TB) infection. It defines latent TB as presence of the TB bacteria without symptoms of active disease. High-risk groups for developing active TB include recent contacts of infectious cases, immunosuppressed individuals, and some medical conditions. Tuberculin skin testing is recommended for diagnosing latent TB, with different induration cut-offs based on risk group. If latent TB is diagnosed, treatment with Isoniazid for 9 months or Rifampin for 4 months is advised along with clinical and laboratory monitoring during therapy.
Antibacterial therapy in COVID-19 patients - an evidence based guidelineDr Jay Prakash
Overuse of antibiotics, delivery of tests and procedures that have little or no clinical benefit is a huge problem in health care, and one that has gained much more attention over the past decade. But despite efforts to reduce overuse like Choosing Wisely, rates of low-value care have barely budged.
This document provides information on updated disease notification responsibilities and immunization guidelines. It lists diseases that medical facilities must notify responders about after exposure. These include bloodborne, airborne, and droplet transmitted diseases like hepatitis, HIV, influenza, meningitis and more. The document discusses prevention of diseases through travel screening, herd immunity from vaccination, and recent disease case numbers. It provides guidance on healthcare worker vaccination and testing requirements.
This document summarizes key points about preparing for winter respiratory infections:
- Respiratory tract infections are most common from September to March and can be spread through coughing, sneezing, or poor hand hygiene. Influenza-like illnesses have sudden onset of fever and respiratory symptoms.
- During the 2014-2015 flu season in the UK, influenza A(H3N2) was the dominant strain initially but influenza B became more common starting in February. Vaccination strategies in the UK focus on seasonal flu shots and pneumococcal vaccines.
