The Security Sector is constantly evolving and with the
huge increase in technology over recent years. There
are now a large number of Security Services on the
market around the World and each country has their
own standards.
A major issue that Multi National Companies have
faced over the years was to identify companies who
met their requirements, and provided a consistent
security provision in any Country they have a
requirement in, and operating to a specific criteria.
In Sept 2015, BSI released the ISO 18788 - Management Systems for Private Security Operations.
This standard looks at a variety of aspects of the Security Providers Business to ensure that they

Security companies have predominately gained
certification in ISO 9001 to endorse their
management system. However, the ISO 18788:2015
provides a framework for establishing,
implementing, operating, monitoring, reviewing,
maintaining and improving the management of
security operations, which ensures that other key
elements that are security specific are also tested
during the audit process.
It provides the principles and requirements for a
security operations management system (SOMS).
ISO 18788:2015 provides a business and risk
management framework for organisations
conducting or contracting security operations and
related activities and functions while demonstrating:
a) Conduct of professional security operations to
meet the requirements of clients and other
stakeholders;
b) Accountability to law and respect for human
rights;
c) Consistency with voluntary commitments to
which it subscribes.
ISO 18788:2015 is applicable to any
organisation that needs to:
a) Establish, implement, maintain and improve an
SOMS;
b) Assess its conformity with its stated security
operations management policy;
c) Demonstrate its ability to consistently provide
services that meet client needs and are in
conformance with applicable laws and human rights
requirements.
This gives the buyer confidence that the relationship
will have minimal risk for their business and
maximum benefit and will ultimately raise and
reinforce security standards around the world.

GDPR - BE READY FOR 25/05/2018
GDPR was introduced by the EU in order to strengthen
data protection for all individuals within the EU, there are
two tiers of fines. The first is up to 2% of your global
turnover or €10 million whichever is higher, the second tier
is 4% of your global turnover or €20 million, whichever is
higher.

EMPLOYMENT LAW UPDATES 2018
A lot is set to change for employment in 2018, as well as GDPR here are some other key
changes to look out for as employers and HR specialists.
• 30/03/2018 - Gender pay gap reporting for public sector employers
• 01/04/2018 - National Living Wage
• April 2018 - New statutory rates
• 04/04/2018 - Gender pay gap reporting for private sector employers
• 06/04/2018 - Taxation of termination payments
• June 2018 - EU Trade Secrets Directive
ISO TRANSITION UPDATE
• There are now less than 200 days until the deadline for transitioning to the 2015
versions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
• ISO 45001 has passed the final ballot with over 90% approval and thus will be officially
launched mid March (15th March is expected)
• BSI are expecting the final draft (FDIS) of the ISO 22000 for Food Safety Management
Systems to be published on the 28th of February.
• The International Standard for Service Excellence (TISSE), whilst not ISO, is also going
through a transition period. TISSE 2018 has launched and is expected to follow a
3 year transition model, similar to ISO.

ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES
Minimum Energy Performance Ratings
From 1st April 2018, there will be a requirement for any privately rented properties to have
a minimum energy performance rating of E. The government has announced it will be
unlawful to rent out a property which breaches this minimum rating. A civil penalty of up to
£4,000 will be imposed for landlords who do - meaning properties which fall in the F or G
category will no longer be acceptable
HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATES
Chemical compliance
1 May 2018 sees the final REACH registration deadline. Those businesses importing or
manufacturing 1-100 tonnes of a substance which benefited from a pre-registration will now
have a registration obligation. This final deadline will see the highest number of REACH
registrations to date. Some companies who manufacture/import large volumes of
substances, or who deal in particularly hazardous substances will have already made
registrations and should be now be familiar with the process. However, for a large number
of SMEs this will be a new experience. Registration itself, working within a SIEF and
negotiating rights to access data can be a time consuming process. Those affected by this
need to take immediate steps to comply. Many businesses are considering now the possible
impact of Brexit as they plan their registration strategy.
The new EU Regulation on the restriction of the use of mercury comes into force on 1
January 2018. The legislation implements the international Minamata Convention and
places restrictions on the use, trade in and manufacture of mercury and mercury
compounds.
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has also confirmed that a
focus for 2018-2019 will be a campaign on dangerous substances and how risk can be
managed in the workplace.
OTHER CHANGES FOR 2018
New drone laws
Drones - unmanned aircraft - are becoming
increasingly regulated amid health and safety
fears. In 2018, the UK government is introducing
new laws which mean users will need to take a
basic online safety test and register their drone in
order to lawfully use it. Police will also be able to
search and seize drones if they have grounds for
suspicion. The test has been described as ‘similar
to a driving theory test.’
