This document contains examples of various types of functional texts in English, including notices/warnings, greeting cards, letters/emails, short messages, advertisements, announcements, shopping lists, invitations, schedules, and food labels. Each example provides 1-3 paragraphs describing the purpose and typical structure or content of that text type to help the reader understand its function.

1. 1. CAUTION / NOTICE / WARNING
Functional text is used for everyday information. It is called functional because
it helps you function in your day- to- day life. For example, if you wanted to know
your friend’s phone number, you would look in a phone book. If you wanted to say
something to someone who is absent, you would leave a message. If you took a
medicine, you would need to read the directions.
Notice/ warning/ caution is one of short functional texts. Notice is written or
printed statement that gives information or a warning to people.

2. Greeting Card
A greeting card is an illustrated piece of card or high quality paper featuring an
expression of friendship or other sentiment. Although greeting cards are usually given
on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they are also sent
to convey thanks or express other feelings. Greeting cards, usually packaged with an
envelope, come in a variety of styles. There are both mass-produced as well as
handmade versions that are distributed by hundreds of companies large and small.
While typically inexpensive, more elaborate cards with die-cuts or glued-on
decorations may be more expensive.
Hallmark Cards and American Greetings are the two largest producers of
greeting cards in the world today (both are U.S-based companies).
In Western countries and increasingly in other societies, many people
traditionally mail seasonally themed cards to their friends and relatives in December.
Many service businesses also send cards to their customers in this season, usually
with a universally acceptable non-religious message such as "happy holidays" or
"season's greetings".
The Greeting Card Association is an international trade organization
representing the interests of greeting card and stationery manufacturers. John Beeder,
former president of the Greeting Card Association, says greeting cards are effective
tools to communicate important feelings to people you care about: "Anyone feels
great when they receive an unexpected card in the mail. For me, there’s nothing like a
greeting card to send a special message. I’m proud to be a part of an industry that not
only keeps people connected, but uses both imagery and the power of words to help
us express our emotions.”

2. 3. Letter / Email
Letter text is a text in the English language in the form of a letter . Letter text
usually contain an invitation to attend something , to share the experience with others
, and much more .

when it was made

Short message is a short message that is used to communicate something to
another person for that person to do or not do something because we can not meet in
person to the person , we will give the message.
Short Message should give in formations about :

5. Advertisement
Advertisement (Advertising) is a text that has the purpose to announce a
something that appeals to many people and to be a famous-added products in all the
public in the form of a means of communication with the users of the product or
service. Ad paid for by those who sent them and are intended to advise or influence
those who received the message.
Advertisement is always present, even though people may not be aware of it. In
today's world, advertising using any media that may be to pass the message. It is
through television, print (newspapers, magazines, journals, etc.), radio, broadcast,
internet, direct sales, hoardings, mailer, contests, links, posters, clothing, event, color,
sound, visuals and even people (endorsements ).
The purpose of Advertisement (Advertising)
 To invite the listener or reader to buy or use the goods or services offered in
the ad.
 to announce / advertise about a case or a product to the public

4.  Communicant sensitize and provide information about a product (can be
goods, services, ideas, etc.).
 Attempting to cause a feeling like yourself communicant on the advertised
product by giving preferences will-preferences will.

Based on the type of media used, the ad can be classified as follows:
1. Print Ads
Print ads are the types of ads that are published using print media such as
newspapers, magazines, tabloids, and others. based on the space used in the media of
newspapers, magazines, tabloids, known ads in two forms, namely: Classifieds and
Advertising Column
2. Advertorial
Ad advertorial is a type of advertising that is packaged as news.
3. Display Ads
Judging from the shape, display advertising is greater than the advertising
columns. In this ad, display images and text larger.
4. Electronic Advertising
Electronic ad is an ad published in the electronic media. Electronic advertising
can be classified into: radio ads, television ads, Internet advertising, advertising,
public service announcements.
Characteristics of Advertisement (Advertising)
Advertisement advertisement has characteristics of language as follows:

 Interesting choice of words used, precise, logical, and courteous.
 Choice of words used have a suggestion for the audience.

5. 6. Annaucement
Announcement ( announcement ) is the statement ( formal notice ) in the form
of verbal or writing that contains something for known by everyone . However , not
everyone who heard or read the announcement concerned over the announcement.
Announcements can we hear or read anywhere , for example verbal announcements at
school or in public places , while a written statement can be read on the bulletin board
, in newspapers and in magazines.
The announcement of this board installed in a place easily seen and clearly
written . There are some parts that must exist in making an announcement , namely :
a. The title / type of an event
b . Date and time
c . Place : Place
d . Contact Person / address

7. Shopping List
Shopping list is a list that contains anything that we will buy. Shopping list is
important to be made because it can help us when we forget to buy something or
control our money.

a. Fajar goes to the market and she will buy some school equipment. Here is
Fajar’s Shopping List:

8. Invitation
Definition and Examples of Creating Invitation Invitation English - If we want
to hold an event for sure we will plan anyone who would we invite to the event. For
that , we usually make the invitation that will be given to those who will attend the
event. The invitation we give as a formality to invite them . Invitation in English is
called with the invitation .
Understanding invitation itself is an invitation given by one person to another to
attend an important event , such as student council , a birthday celebration , a person ,
school graduation , school farewell , and wedding celebrations . Invitation letters
should be written with a model that is easy to read and its contents are written clearly
. In the invitation , we include the name , people invited , event , time (day , date,
time ) , the place , the message / additional information , as well as the name of the
person who invited

9. Schedule
Schedule is the schedule , it could be a timetable or so-called school timetable ,
television shows or televisions programs , schedule a performance or show time , the
flight schedule or flight schedule , travel schedule or itinerary , and scheduled arrival
or departure of the train . One aim of the schedule is that planned activities can be
carried out well.

8. 10. Food
A food label, a panel found on a package of food which contains a variety of
information about the nutritional value of the food item. There are many pieces of
information which are standard on most food labels, including serving size, number
of calories, grams of fat, included nutrients, and a list of ingredients.
