Causatives

- 2. Causative verbsare used to indicate why or how something occurs. They do not indicate something the subject did for themselves, but something the subject got someone or something else to do for them.

- 7. HAVE/GET-DIRECT OBJECT-PAST PARTICIPLE This is used because another person does something for you. You are not doing these things on your own! Here the doer is not stated but we can guess. Who repairs our cars? Who pulls our teeth? Who checks our eyes? Who mowes our grass?
- 8. LOOK AT THESESENTENCES! I had my sister do my homework because I was too busy to do it. My father is having me buy bread. Who does my homework? Who buys bread?
- 9. HAVE-INDIRECT OBJECT- BASEFORM In this causative form, again, someone does something for us but this time we clearly know who does them. The doer is stated in this form.
- 10. LOOK AT THESESENTENCES I will get my student to bring my laptop case. My sister gets her husband to answer the calls. Am I bringing my laptop case? Is my sister’s husband answering the calls?
- 11. GET-INDIRECT OBJECT-INFINITIVE FORM Someone does something for us in this causative structure but infinitive form of the verb is used this time.
