CAUSATIVES
HAVE AND GET
Arif Yıldızlı
 Causative verbs are used to indicate why or
how something occurs.
 They do not indicate something the subject
did for themselves, but something the subject
got someone or something else to do for
them.
 If we can’t do something by ourselves we
need other people.
 Other people can do these things for us.
 To express this we need causative verbs.
CAN YOU DO ONE OF THEM BY YOURSELF?

 I had my car repaired yesterday.
 My sister got her tooth pulled.
 You need to have your eyes checked.
 Mary will get her grass mowed.
What is in common in these sentences?
have/get-direct object- past participle
HAVE/GET-DIRECT OBJECT-PAST PARTICIPLE
 This is used because another person does
something for you. You are not doing these
things on your own!
 Here the doer is not stated but we can
guess.
 Who repairs our cars?
 Who pulls our teeth?
 Who checks our eyes?
 Who mowes our grass?
LOOK AT THESE SENTENCES!
 I had my sister do my homework because I
was too busy to do it.
 My father is having me buy bread.
 Who does my homework?
 Who buys bread?
HAVE-INDIRECT OBJECT- BASE FORM
 In this causative form, again, someone does
something for us but this time we clearly
know who does them.
 The doer is stated in this form.
LOOK AT THESE SENTENCES
 I will get my student to bring my laptop case.
 My sister gets her husband to answer the
calls.
 Am I bringing my laptop case?
 Is my sister’s husband answering the calls?
GET-INDIRECT OBJECT-INFINITIVE FORM
 Someone does something for us in this
causative structure but infinitive form of the
verb is used this time.
