2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

National Extension Technology Community Conference
KSU / Manhattan, Kansas
2. Why SharePoint?
Periodic requests for data transfer/archive between
offices
SharePoint reduced time spent strategizing other
solutions = improved productivity
Security and control over access created by targeted
permissions (member, owner, visitor, group)
Centralized document & data collection,
management, archiving
Provides communications & collaboration for a
dispersed workforce -- bridges the “geography gap”
3. SharePoint @ UVM
2004 original installation at UVM
March 2013 -- upgraded to SharePoint Foundation
2010
Maintained by UVM IT, Enterprise Technology
Services (ETS)
Possible update to version 2013 – depends on
outcome of institutional e-mail/calendar client
replacement decision in 2014
4. UVM Extension At-A-Glance
State Dean’s Office, Burlington, Vt. (main campus)
Offices in 11 of Vermont’s 14 counties

6. Keep SharePoint Simple
Some users may find SharePoint confusing, use basic
features, minimize support needs:
People & Groups
Customize access permissions
Quick launch & top link bar for navigation
Libraries & folders
Themes/colors (variety when managing multiple sites)
* Limited use of workflows, modules/forms, surveys, project tasks,
issue tracking
7. Examples
“Sandbox” (on-the-fly projects)
Workshop presentation collaboration
Photos
Crisis management – Hurricane Irene, 2011
Various other data management uses
8. Build a “Sandbox”
Create a workspace on-
the-fly for other users in
your organization who
might not feel
comfortable setting up a
site on their own
Customize member,
owner, visitor
groups/permissions
Set up document library
9. ROPS* & Vt. AgrAbility
“Needed it yesterday”
Staffing change created need for document & resource
transition to PI & admin staff in another office
Files too large for e-mail, FTP
Documents in one location – reports, surveys,
spreadsheets, PowerPoint files
Consultant set up with “member” credentials allowing her
to “contribute” only
PI & AA set up as “owners” with full control of site
* Rollover Protective Structures project

11. Teaching
Collaboration – 2012 professional development
