This is a preview of the upcoming unit that we will be doing in our classroom. I hope this will help you in keeping up with what your child is doing at school so that you may help them at home. Counting and Monetary Values
This is unit is designed to help students better understand counting, money, and the practical application of both. During this unit the students will learn how identify larger numbers and recognize the different place values within those numbers. They will also learn about expanded notation and how a larger number can be broken down into smaller components. They will also learn how to count actual money (coins and bills) and then apply a written amount to that number. They will also learn the values of coins and how they can be used interchangeably. Unit Overview
StandardsThe next unit that we will be starting next week is called “Counting and Monetary Values.” During this unit your child will learn how to do the following:Demonstrate concepts of number sense by using multiple representations of whole numbers up to 1000, counting forward and backward by threes from a given number, identifying a number that is 100 more or 100 less than a given number, and differentiate between odd and even numbers.Determine the monetary value of sets of coins and bills up to $2.00It will take us several weeks to accomplish all of these goals so please be patient with your child as we attempt all of them.
ObjectivesDuring this unit there are several objectives that I hope to accomplish with the students:Determine the value of a digit in the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.Determine the value of a number expressed in expanded notationExchange coins of equivalent valueApply monetary symbols including: dollar ($), decimal point (.), and cents (¢)
Student, Teacher, and Parent Roles
Student RolesAs with every unit that we do, your child plays the most important role as the student who is learning the new material.I expect every student to arrive at school eager to learn and open to new experiences. During this unit I will be allowing them to have a more hands-on approach to learning and I hope that we will behave accordingly and that it will help them better understand the material.
Teacher RoleMy job as your child’s teacher is to instill knowledge in them to the best of my abilities as an educator. In this unit I hope to be able to involve them in more hands-on activities (i.e. counting out “play” money and making exchanges with classmates) that I think will help them better understand the material.I will also be taking more time with certain parts of this unit, specifically the sections about expanded notation and place values, in order to make sure that every student has a firm grasp of the information.I will also be available after school if you feel that your child needs additional assistance.
Parent RoleYou, as the parent, play an important role in how well these concepts are mastered by your children. I only have your students for eight hours everyday and can only do so much with them on a particular subject during that time. It is up to you to help your child with homework at night at home in order to help them perfect their skills. The more you practice these skills with your child the better they will become. As always parent volunteers are always welcome in our classroom and we would love to have any of you come and assist us during this unit.
During this unit your child will be able to answer new questions about mathematical concepts, be involved in project based learning, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.Benefits of the Unit
Some example questions that you can use to help your child throughout the unitBy the end of this unit your child should be able to answer or attempt to answer most of the following questions:How can you write out a number of three digits or more when adding sums together? What are the place values for each digit in a three digit number? How can monetary values be used to show you what place value a number gets when using money? How do you write out the value of 145?What is the place value of 6 in 1,356?What coins and bills can be used to represent $1.34?
Project Based LearningDuring this unit I will be using methods that are called Project Based Learning. PBL will provide an authentic learning opportunity for your child. It will also allow them to build 21st century skills.Using Project Based Learning with this unit will not only help your child build better Math skills, but also critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills by using practice applications for concepts.
