Smooth 101.9 Denver’s Brand New K-High!
Denver’s newest radio station is finally on the air. After careful market research and
a very lucky break, our team has de veloped the perfect r adio station to reach
affluent Denver adults be tween the ages of 25-54 .

Summer 2008

KKHI-FM (101.9) A division of Bustos Media of Colorado 8975 East Kenyon Avenue Denver, Colorado 80237 Tele: 303. 889. 1019
Here’s our story.

The Smooth Adult Contempory format that we have developed on 101.9
is being spearheaded by Denver “uber-radio programmer” Steve
Hamilton. The reason we decided to call is Smooth AC (SAC for those
with short attention spans) is pretty simple.

There are some remarkable radio stations in Denver. And, frankly we
would like to become one ourselves. So we are leaving “nothing on the
field” with this radio station. The first step was to hire Steve and let him
work his music magic on his Apple Computer (yes, we are Mackie’s).
We saw a lightning bolt opportunity:

Rather than join the ongoing obsession in Denver radio to sound “just like
KBCO” (we would list them, buts its kind of embarrassing), we decided to
go another route.

When Lincoln Financial bailed on playing smooth jazz on KJCD-FM104.3,
we saw a lighting bolt opportunity.

So rather than copy what they killed, we developed something brand new
with former CD 104 listeners in mind.

Denver’s new K-High is the best music mix from the world of pop, jazz, &
rock. Plus, some tasty new standards that are more likely to be on your I-
Pod than on the radio.
Great Music on K-High:

Core artists on K-High include:

        Diana Krall
        Michael Buble
        Santana
Earl Klugh and just because he’s smooth – Kenny G!

You will also hear classic songs from The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan,
Boz Skaggs, Aretha Franklin and an occasional Ray Charles & Steve
Wonder.
As we develop the station this summer, some of our weekend
programming is certain to make you move too.

More on that later – but here’s a little hint: we would not want to be an AM
radio station right now playing anything that has to do with Dean Martin or
Frank Sinatra, or Tony Bennett.

We decided to call it SAC. Because we feel it’s the best music on the radio and
its always smooth. Hopefully the Arbitron angels will agree.

And, we think we found the perfect name: K-High.

It’s branded K-High in honor of the early broadcasting pioneer in Denver radio
blending the same great music back in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Our goal is to be the best and respect the proud heritage of some of Denver’s
great music stations in the past…And, create something new, fun and hip.
Our People behind the new sound of 101.9:

The guy behind the music is truly a Denver radio musicologist.

For over a decade, Steve Hamilton was the music director of Denver’s legendary
AC station KOSI-FM. Prior to that, Steve was also part of the original Denver K-
High team in the early 1990’s.

You can also hear Steve every weekday on K-High between 10 & 2pm. Steve
not only sounds great on Denver’s New K-High, he’s also the guy picking every
song you hear on our radio station.

Then, we grabbed Kenny Cortes as fast as possible. For five years, Kenny was
the morning guy at CD104. He and his family have made Colorado home for
many years and Kenny is a great radio morning host. Kenny’s Morning High airs
weekday morning from 6:00 to 10:00.

The morning show is completely re-tooled from the CD104 days. It’s more vibrant
and interactive to showcase Kenny’s amazing talents, great music and relevant
info.
The guy that got hit by the lightning bolt:

Together with Steve and Kenny, came along industry guru, Chuck Lontine & the
K-High concept was born.

Chuck’s deal is pretty easy to explain.

He was born right here in Denver. In fact, his family has lived in Denver for over
100 years. He’s been in radio forever in some pretty smooth markets like San
Francisco, Chicago & Philadelphia. But, way back in 1976, he first opened a
microphone on FM 100 KLIR right hear in Denver.

Chuck is our new Vice President & General Manager. He is also the key architect
of K-High.

Chuck was also part of the team at KOSI and was the creator of the highly
acclaimed “Radio for Change” on 1490 in Boulder (which he sold to Colorado
Public Radio in 2001).
Chuck’s expertise is more in the business & financial end of the industry. He’s
also the founder of Marconi Media Ventures.

This Lodo based partnership, has engineered more single radio deals in Denver
than any other source.

In fact, one of those deals was the $21m sale of KKHI (then KKCS) to our parent
company Bustos Media in 2006.

He’s also sold some other stations in Denver, but we are not allowed to talk
about that.
So, we decided to go for it:

Over the past three decades, Denver has always had a commercial Jazz station
and those stations always performed pretty good in Arbitron.

Jazz greats like KADX-FM, KHIH-FM and long ago the Jazz Show on KFML-AM.

Unfortunately, the way radio has become a humble servant of Wall Street; it’s
pretty tough to actually serve the listeners the way it was done back in the days
of yore (that would be when Clinton was in office).

So, whenever a local station even hints that it might be losing its way (or in the biz
we call it share), it becomes something else.

With the abandonment of CD104 by Lincoln Financial this spring and the untimely
demise of Martini Radio on 101.5, we felt that a credible 12 plus four share
(AQH) listener base had lost its voice.
First we had to do a little math & science:

We had already begun to complete a massive technical upgrade of our former
Colorado Springs signal at 101.9 on the radio dial.

It was a bit of a technical chess game and it took over two years.

Our technical wizards (and a team of lawyers) asked the Federal Communications
Commission in DC to let us move our signal to Denver.

They finally said yes in January 2008!

Now, every hour you will hear that our station is broadcasting from Highlands
Ranch (Centennial) and subsequently the entire Denver-Boulder Radio Market.
Centennial is actually in the Denver-Boulder radio market. It’s a local
neighborhood in the Denver Tech Center in Southeast Denver (as opposed to
someplace closer to Wyoming or out east toward Kansas).

Once we decided to make the format change to K-High, another technical
overhaul was absolutely necessary.

We wanted to make sure that the sound you hear coming out of your speakers
was as crisp, clear and Hi-Fi as you would expect from any other Denver radio
station.

So we tore out a mile of old nasty wires from our studio and all kinds of crazy
white noise from our transmission signal.

The end result: K-High is truly both a new format and new sound in
Denver radio.
We had to get permission from the board of Directors:

Lastly, we had to get permission from our wonderful Chief Executive Officer,
Amador Bustos, to make the switch.

Amador’s been in radio a long time and he knows how to recognize a wonderful
opportunity. Along with his brother John, they are the savvy co-founders of
Bustos Media, LLC.

We had to make our case that K-High would have high appeal to both clients
and listeners in the Denver-Boulder market. And, in the end, it would be a radio
station that they would be very proud to own.

Luckily for us, they said: go for it!
Marketing to the K-High Community:

We’re shooting for a 3 Share within two books. With a laser focused media plan
that includes TV, where TV is actually watched by people who like this type of
music.

We’ve established a strategic partnership with 9News & My20 in the fall during
sweeps. We’ve also planned a key summer campaign with CBS Outdoor and a
really sharp e-campaign utilizing the web (with interactive text).

We also plan to have a state of the art bandwidth web stream. Even with the
strongest radio station on the planet, its tough to get into all those nooks and
crannys along Denver’s front range. It has something to do with all those office
buildings in Downtown Denver and the Denver Tech Center filled with metal,
concrete and glass & those big wonderful mountains filled with lead and iron.

We are also partnering with our friends at Comcast to make sure the people who
watch Bravo, Lifetime, A & E (you get the idea) know all about K-High.
Concerned about Everything that Concerns Colorado:

K-High has also launched a new campaign designed especially toward Denver’s
schools, churches & non-profits.

Its called the Concerned & Cares program and it’s a daily feature that airs 10
times per day. As an actual inventoried spot, K-High has teamed with the
Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) or the “Blue Bear” in Denver to feature
several of its 100 or so members doing good work in Denver. This is not a typical
PSA. We actually showcase the SCFD members in an active campaign on K-
High.

It’s all part of the interactive K-High Community.
Now, the sales pitch:

So now, we need your help.

If you like what you hear on K-High and you think this would be a good place to
do business. Please, give us a try.

As a founding advertiser, you can be the first to recognize the same great
opportunity that, Amador, John, Chuck, Steve & Kenny saw in K-High.

We have all kinds of effective, affordable and smooth media opportunities to be
part of the K-High Community.

We’ll let one of our sales people lead you through those. But here’s our
guarantee: We did our homework. We know there is a great market for our new
station and we hope to go to work for you this summer.

Thanks for listening,

The Staff of Denver’s New K-High!
