Maya Thomas collected data from students, teachers, and administrators to identify issues with the pre-algebra curriculum and pedagogy at a school. She found that lower-achieving students had poor attitudes towards the subject and that the textbook was missing significant materials. To address these problems, Maya proposed two options - having students write about how math applies in their daily lives or allowing them to help teach lessons. For these changes to be successful, Maya needs to ensure teacher commitment to the new approaches and gain support from parents and the assistant principal who are accustomed to traditional methods. School-wide mathematics reform could start from Maya's work with one teacher, without changing Maya's proposed options, as her methods were helpful for identifying instructional problems
