The problem of substance abuse is most common in young adults and children. The health risks associated with substance use are often ignored by these individuals completely putting them at risks of various other problems such as suicide, car crashes and unintentional injuries. Child behavior and substance abuse is directly linked to the parenting style that the child is exposed to. The choices made by these young adolescents are significantly influenced by the way their parents bring them up. However, the influence of parents is not limited to their upbringing style alone; other factors such as their personal choices might impact the child’s behavior significantly. In this paper the influence of parents on their child’s behavior and substance use shall be explored in detail. Summary There are a number of common risk factors that make children prone to substance use include the following: 1. Family History of addiction. 2. Psychiatric disorder. A family history of addiction and substance use significantly makes a child prone to following down the same path. [Kaplow, Curran, & Dodge. (2002)] Parental substance use directly impacts the psychology of the child’s brain making him more likely to find the entire concept of substance use attractive. This notion is directly supported by the Social Learning Theory that hypothesizes that children model their parent’s behavior. Young children have a tendency of mimic and follow the behaviors of their elders. In order to seek approval they unconsciously tend to adopt the ideology of following in their footsteps. Another theory that can be used to signify this notion is the Social Control Theory that hypothesizes that children who have a strong relationship with their parents are less likely to feel the need to rebel and break the rules. The development of a strong emotional bond between parents and adolescents plays a significant role in determining whether or not children become prone to substance abuse. Hence, family history and parental role and involvement both act as strong factors in determining whether or not a child follows the same course. [Petraitis. Flay & Miller. (1995)] The two theories discussed above go hand in hand. Parental attitude towards the substance use significantly impacts the child’s perception of how they view that entire concept of using drugs. Other factors such as parental monitoring and control portray a similar correlation. A Legal Model for the Social Studies Not only did the legal profession give educators the instructional technique of case studies, but it also contributed a concomitant method of case study analysis. Although disciplines such as business management, social sciences, and medicine have extensively used the methodology of case studies, students in these disciplines were not provided with a method to analyze a case. Some of these cases required only an individual value conclusion; other cases required a specific conclusion based upon substantive knowledge of the discipline. Still others required both types of conclusions. Only in law classes are students given an unequivocal method for case analysis. According to this method, students recognize a legal issue from the facts in the case and then analyze the facts according to a legal precedent and reach a conclusion. The underlying assumptions of teaching-effectiveness research can be applied to this topic in a social studies class: Teachers cannot assume that all students on their own will develop a method of case analysis; that initial success will motivate the student to continue the analysis process; and that the students require a clear demonstration or modeling of the case analysis method (Brophy and Good 1986). The social studies literature does not give examples of these analysis methods. Because the use of case studies in the social studies fosters critical thinking, class interaction, and personal initiative, a method of case study analysis warrants the attention of social studies teachers. When the case study instructional technique is used in the social studies classroom, students are often required to comprehend, assess, and evaluate amounts of information that may be overwhelming. Unfortunately, students do not receive enough practice in the method of case study analysis before they are required to comprehend relationships, generalizations, and patterns. Such a situation is self-defeating for students because without acquiring the rudimentary skills of case analysis, they will not be able to contribute to the lesson at hand. In addition, students are then expected to make value judgments about the facts, issues, and conclusions of a case study. To make an informed and coherent value judgment, students must first comprehend the facts, recognize the issues that arise from those facts, analyze the facts in relation to the definition or rule of a term, and then reach a conclusion about the analysis. To make a value-laden decision such as "I don't agree with that," the student should first say that the facts produce issue X and then analyze the facts in accordance with each element of the rule in order to make a viable conclusion about whether the issue is proved or disproved. Once students enter the school setting, their behaviors, interpersonal relations, and emotional adjustments contribute to their successful academic development. Positive school behaviors and interpersonal relations represent good adjustments in the school setting, whereas negative school behaviors and interpersonal relations represent poor school adjustments. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of deviant behaviour on the academic achievement of early adolescents in the Limbe I Sub Division. This study used the descriptive survey as a design for the research study. The main instruments used were the questionnaire an interview and observation. Purposive sampling was adopted. Three secondary schools were selected. A pilot study was used on one school to improve on the clarity and relevance of the instruments. The study revealed that deviant behaviour has a very detrimental effect on academic achievement of students. Most teachers use corporal punishment as a means of managing deviant behaviour in schools. The teachers used exclusion as the last resort to pupils who have deviant behaviour. The Results also indicated that individual inattentive behaviors and classroom-level of externalizing behaviors negatively and significantly predicted academic performance three years later. Overall, results here confirmed the previous literature supporting the negative effects of inattentive behaviors and classroom-level externalizing behaviors on the students academic grades and achievement test scores. Therefore, indicators of deviant behavior (aggression, withdrawal and bullying) had an influence on the academic achievement of students with deviant behaviours. Recommendations were made to teachers, parents and other stakeholders to help curb deviant beaviours not just in schools but at home and in the community.
