Drug overdoses cause acute respiratory failure as poisons do not change their chemical structure, but instead prevent the diaphragm from controlling breathing and providing the 1.5 liters of air needed every 5 seconds. Naloxone is a secondary treatment as it does not always work, so any respiratory patient needs continuous assistance through rescue breathing or other means to prevent cells, tissues, and organs like the brain from dying without oxygen. High doses of Naloxone may be needed along with ongoing respiratory support.
