Plant life management and plant license extension are crucial issues for nuclear operators.
Extension of reactor lifetimes from 40 to 60 years is enhancing the economic competitiveness of plants, while both ownership and operation of these is becoming concentrated. Financially, operators would sooner extend the life of their plants rather than decommissioning, an issue which is now more important than ever due to the current economic situation.
There are now 104 operating nuclear power reactors in the USA, with over half coming to the end of their 40 year cycle. These plants now need approval by the NRC to continue operating by applying for a new operating license. This process is complex often taking years to complete. The NRC guidelines must be followed giving rise to predicaments such as replacing nuclear components and the obsolescence of equipment, as well as degradation issues with underground piping and medium voltage cables. In addition, how will we overcome plant aging issues and how will we break the 60 year barrier?
Now in its 18th year, PLIM & PLEX 2009 in Chicago, USA, will include significant case studies and presentations from leading utilities, operators, innovators in R&D, regulators and international associations to provide answers to these and other topical questions. From long range planning for capital modification to overcoming fuel storage problems, this conference will provide insight in how to solve the critical issues facing the industry today.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

A Pioneer
In 1949, National Power Rodding Corp. (the first of the Carylon companies) saw a need for
better sewer cleaning equipment than was available at that time. As a result, they developed
and patented the world’s first heavy-duty “continuous rod” power rodder; an exceptional
piece of machinery that proved to be far superior to anything on the market.
Innovative Solutions
Industrial plants and utility companies quickly saw the applications and benefits of our power-
rodding service. They began contracting with us for the cleaning of blast-furnace stoves and
rodding of underground utility ducts.
This added fuel to our enthusiasm for innovation. Soon thereafter, we became the first to
research, develop and successfully use closed-circuit television to inspect sewers. By sending
a specially designed television camera through the sewer we were able to locate causes of
leaks and blockages without any excavation whatsoever. This new method of sewer inspection
literally revolutionized the industry and is the basis for the present day maintenance of the
Long before world’s sewer infrastructure.
“environment” Often, while televising a sewer, it was apparent to us that the pipeline was structurally sound
and didn’t need to be replaced if only its leaks could be successfully repaired from inside the
became a household pipe. This led us to design our own machines for still another innovative sewer maintenance

we could solve it from inside the pipe without costly excavation.

3. Responsive
Carylon companies were among the first to provide privatized disaster response; giving top
priority to requests for assistance following any natural or man-made disaster. The first news
flashes had hardly aired when all of our available men and equipment were mobilized and
ready for the massive cleanup operations that followed the Johnstown, PA; New Orleans, LA;
Waterbury, CT; and Salt Lake City, UT floods; the Los Angeles, CA earthquake; Galveston,
TX hurricane; and Mt. St. Helen volcanic eruption.
We were among the first private contractors to respond when a tunnel beneath Chicago’s
Loop was breached, causing the flooding of the city’s entire downtown area. When the call for
help came, our response was swift and sure. We knew after such disasters one of the most
important and difficult tasks facing a municipality was the rapid cleanup and restoration of its
municipal services. Our vast resource of men, equipment and experience helped these and
other disaster-stricken communities restore normality to the lives of their residents in the
shortest time possible. Our men and equipment were also deployed to “ground zero” to aid
in the mammoth cleanup operation following the devastating September 11, 2001, terrorist
attack on the World Trade Center.
Committed
With its network of companies located throughout the U.S.A., the Carylon Corporation
has grown to become the largest and most experienced industrial & municipal specialized
maintenance contractor in the country. More than 58 years later, we are still operating under
the same principles as when we first opened our doors. We are committed to providing our
customers with the best possible service available anywhere, and approach each and every job
with the same enthusiasm and pride as if it were our first.
Guaranteed Results
When you select a Carylon company to solve your environmental maintenance problems,
you can rest assured you made the correct choice. Whether your project calls for the use
of one man and one piece of equipment, or multi-disciplinary crews and a fleet of specialized
equipment, we can do the job, and do it right. And, we don’t just say we can – we guarantee it.

Mini-Cam Television Inspection
Pipe lines and other areas previously inaccessible due to their size or location can now be easily
and economically inspected. Using specially designed miniature cameras and equipment, Carylon
company technicians can internally inspect piping as small as 2 inches in diameter. They can see
behind, under, over, between and inside equipment and structures; look into service connections,
pipes, holes, wells, walls, chimneys and tanks. Problems are quickly located and can be recorded on
video tape or CD-ROM.

Sonar Pipeline Inspection
In the past, pipelines filled with murky water have not been inspected due to the high cost and
potential downtime involved with the process. Now, using high-resolution sonar units (which may
be skid, float, or robotic tractor mounted) we can survey and fully assess pipelines, 10” to 120” in
diameter, measuring the magnitude of any defects that may be present. This same concept allows
our operators to measure debris and sediment depth in pipelines and shafts.
As the scanner is moved through the pipeline an indication of distance traveled is shown and
recorded on the screen. Internal sensors monitor the attitude of the scanning device and is
displayed as pitch and roll indicators in analogue and digital form on the screen to show the
orientation of the unit.
Sonar profiling has proven useful in a variety of applications. Surcharged pipelines, siphons, river
crossings, and force mains can be inspected with confidence and without the the costly, disruptive
and sometimes impossible need for bypass pumping. Hard copy reports can be supplied, as well as
electronic reports that can be opened in almost any computer aided design software.

Infiltration Control (Chemical Grouting)
Our combination Digital Television Inspection/Sewer Joint Sealing service provides a guaranteed
solution to the problem of excessive infiltration, without costly excavation, disruption of traffic,
or by-pass pumping of sewage.
When a leak is located by the television camera, our technician
stationed in a mobile laboratory at the job-site can isolate and quickly
seal the leak, usually in less than a minute. Pipe condition, type
of leak, type of soil, chemicals present in the sewage and ground
water pressure are all factors that are considered before selecting a
chemical/catalyst combination that is most suitable.
Proportioning, blending and injection of the grout is varied to meet
specific conditions and requirements of each individual job. The operation is handled entirely from
above ground without any excavation, blockage of sewers or by-passing of sewage. All joint seals are
fully guaranteed.

Lateral Service Line Inspection/Sealing
Studies have shown that service laterals are often a source of
significant infiltration, and that most infiltration into these lines occurs
within a few feet of the main. There are two primary reasons for this;
all except the last few feet of service lines are usually above the water
table, and groundwater flows easily in the backfill of a mainline trench
because of the French drain effect. Using pressure chemical grouting
we can quickly and effectively seal leaks in service laterals, and
because chemical grout is economical, a positive return on investment
can soon be realized.

No-Dig Cured-In-Place-Pipe (CIPP) Spot Repairs
It’s a practical, fast and economical “no dig” solution for
pipes with partial structural deterioration and/or distortion,
interior corrosion, settling, misalignment and cracking. It
provides jointless renovation, improves flow characteristics, adds
to the structural integrity of the pipe and virtually eliminates all
exfiltration and infiltration at the repaired area. Our cured-in-
place-pipe (CIPP) lining consists of an epoxy-based, impregnated
polyurethane-coated felt tubing that is installed by experienced
technicians using trenchless “pull in, inflate and cure” methods.
It is used for sectional pipe repairs and can reconstruct pipes segments from 6 inches to 5
feet in diameter, and 1 to 30 feet in length. Our methods exceed all ASTM minimum strength
requirements, and the epoxies can be formulated for job specific applications.

Epoxy & Cementitious Structural Rehabilitation & Protective Coatings
Manholes • Vaults • Tanks • Wastewater Treatment Plants • Secondary Containment and other
structures.
Our rehabilitation specialists can restore your manholes and other
structures to “better than new” condition in less time than it would take to
replace them -- and for a fraction of the cost.
Epoxy: Our technicians use a wide range of 100% solids, zero-VOC
epoxies to meet your exact requirements. These structural, high
application efficiency, fast-curing, ultra high-build epoxies are designed
for the rehabilitation of manholes, wet wells, sumps pipelines and other
infrastructure components. They achieve a 50 year design life through
compliance to ASTM F1216 Design Considerations X1.1, and provide
premium corrosion resistance where high concentrations of hydrogen
sulfide, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, hydrocarbons and an array of other
chemicals are present.
Cementitious: We also perform cementitious manhole and structural rehabilitation using products
that are pre-blended specifically for the job at hand. These unique, high-strength formulations allow
a monolithic 1/2 inch to 3 inch one pass spray application that helps restore structural integrity
to deteriorating manholes and other structures, providing a permanent seal against corrosion,
infiltration and exfiltration.

Waste Reduction & Minimization (Sediment/Sludge Dewatering)
Whether your needs call for temporary, seasonal or long-term
dewatering, we have the expertise, manpower and equipment
to do the job, and do it right. We can quickly remove sludge
contaminated sediment or oily wastes from pits, ponds,
lagoons, industrial tanks and digesters. Using recessed
chamber filter presses and other state-of-the-art minimization
equipment, we can then substantially reduce its volume
and corresponding disposal costs. Your sludge volume is
decreased to reduce your disposal costs:
• Our sludge dewatering experts can recommend a program to
reduce the volume and corresponding costs of transportation and disposal.
• Using mobile belt filter presses, recessed chamber filter presses, and centrifuges,
we produce dry sludge cake suitable for disposal by land application or landfilling.
We specialize in reducing sludge to a fraction of it original
volume, shrinking your handling and disposal costs. Our
modern dewatering units can be mobilized to your site. Once
our experienced technicians have removed the sludge from
your pond, lagoon or industrial tank, we dewater it to meet
minimum percent total solid requirements for approved
disposal. The resulting material can be land-applied or
disposed of in a landfill. Our sludge stabilization equipment can
also be utilized to increase beneficial use and disposal options.

Digester Cleaning
Our companies have more than 50 years of experience in bringing sluggish, overloaded and even
inoperable digester tanks back to full operating capacity. Overloading, lack of adequate oxidation
time, loss of gas recovery, or invasion of crustacea, grit and trash, can cause a wastewater digester
to function at only a small percentage of its designed capacity, or not at all. When this occurs,
immediate and thorough cleaning is required.
Our trained and experienced personnel are deployed with all of the necessary
flushing, pumping, venting and safety equipment to quickly and safely remove all
organic and inorganic materials that interfere with the operation of the digester.
Using pressurized water they can remove, transport and dispose of residual
solids. Remaining material is slurried into a semi-liquid form and easily removed
and discharged using pumps that operate at up to 4,500 gpm. We also have the
capabilities and equipment to dewater the removed sludge, grit, trash and other
material, allowing for landfill disposal.

Land Application of Biosolids
Land application of biosolids has become one of the most cost-
efficient biosolids management strategies, and we provide a full
spectrum of services. Our experts consult with area farmers
and county/state authorities to secure suitable land-application
sites and obtain all required permits. Routine monitoring by
certified agronomists ensures environmental compliance.
Site acquisition and permit assistance for beneficial use – lime
stabilization, subsurface injection or surface application. Professional agronomic support for soil
testing and environmental monitoring services. Complete programs on any scale to transport and
land-apply liquid or dry biosolids.

Tank Cleaning
We employ high-volume, low-pressure water to clean tanks
from the outside if the levels of vapors inside require it. Using
high-volume trucks with lances attached, our reach capability
into the tank is approximately 50 feet. This allows us to quickly
and safely flush the tank, remove flammable liquids and move
the sludge to a pick-up point. Upon entry, the stream is split
between two lances and the tank is quickly and thoroughly
cleaned. To reduce the volume of water required, we use a
unique micron-filtration system that allows us to filter the
water generated and reuse it in the cleaning process. Doing this
drastically reduces the amount of water used and contributes
to the overall cost-effectiveness of the project. Our fleet of industrial vacuum tankers, pumps and
equipment ensure the rapid, safe and complete removal of both solids and liquids from tanks.

Hydro-Blasting (Water Blasting)
Using equipment operating at pressures up to 36,000 psi and volumes
from 7 gpm to 40 gpm, our technicians quickly cut through stubborn
scales and product build-up in boiler and heat exchanger tubes; remove
old paint, dirt and rust from structures, machinery and equipment;
and literally peel away soft or hardened deposits from chemical
processing equipment without any damage to their original surfaces.
Our hydro-blast cleaning is the ideal method for cleaning internal as
well as external areas, flat or irregularly shaped surfaces, and for getting
at places that, in the past, were almost impossible to reach, let alone
clean. In addition, our in-house designed system of micron-filtration allows the capture, filtration,
and reuse of the wastewater generated by the cleaning process, reducing the volume of water used
by as much as 80 percent.

Air and Water Vacuum Excavation
Below ground utility infrastructures are becoming more and more congested
as they are adapted to accommodate greater demands. This has led to
increasing safety as well as financial concerns when there is a need to locate and
expose such utilities. Using non-destructive water or air vacuum technology,
we can quickly, safely and economically excavate in areas inaccessible to
conventional digging equipment – even where pressure gas lines and pipelines
are present. Major oil and gas companies, consultants, petrochemical plants
and contractors depend on our speed, safety and know-how for everything
from potholing, pilot holes and slot-trenching to major excavations. Regulatory
authorities recognize our technology as “non-mechanical” excavation, allowing
our equipment to work within 5 feet of hotline buffer zone boundaries.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Wet/Dry Vacuum Cleaning
Jobs that used to take days are completed in just hours. Our custom-built
vacuum vehicles can quickly cleanup the toughest, dirtiest material, no
matter where it’s located. The tremendous suction generated by our
equipment ensures the fast removal of wastes and debris without stirring
up dangerous particles or annoying dust. Metal chips, slag, steel shot, wood
chips, sawdust, grain, mill scale, slurries, sludge and water are just some of
the materials that can be removed quickly and efficiently. In addition, some
of our vacuum vehicles have remote cyclone units attached. These units
are used to discharge the vacuumed material directly into a vessel of your
choice, saving substantial time and money.
Our vacuum vehicles operate at 3200 to 7500 cfm and at 18 to 27 inches of
Mercury, and can move very heavy, wet or dry sludge long distances. A bag house unit filters and
controls the air discharge for the vehicle, as well as an ancillary option of a HEPA filter unit that
filters the air from the vehicle before it is discharged into the atmosphere. Our fleet of vacuum
vehicles includes those equipped with hydraulic sludge pumps and vacuum roll-off equipment that
allow cost-effective simultaneous vacuuming and offloading of material.

Chemical Cleaning
Unwanted heat transfer robbing deposits built-up during normal operation are removed from
industrial process equipment by circulating custom-blended chemical formulations under controlled
conditions. The process is often used to help maintain and enhance the operating efficiency of heat
exchangers, condensers, boilers and towers in refining, chemical processing, electric utility, food
grade and pulp and paper mills. Chemical cleaning is a safer, more effective and more economical
method of cleaning equipment than older, labor-intensive mechanical methods. It offers many
advantages, such as eliminating dismantling for cleaning which saves time, labor and cost. It also
eliminates the need for entry into equipment, and because the chemicals and wastewater are
contained, provides a much more thorough cleaning. Our experienced and highly skilled specialists
determine the correct solutions to meet your needs and then perform the cleaning in a safe and
cost-effective manner.
We have extensive experience in cleaning:
• Glycol Compressors • Hydraulic Flushes
• Refinery Towers • Heat Exchangers
• Facility Piping • Mixers
• Boilers • Inner Coolers
• Refinery Units • Food Grade Units
as well as pre-op cleaning of new tanks and piping.
We can also perform micron-filtration of the wastewater generated by the cleaning process to
remove suspended solids. The chemicals can then be neutralized so they may be discharged into
your on site wastewater treatment facility, thus saving the cost of transportation and disposal
off site. Application of the filtration technology provides an additional advantage of allowing the
wastewater to be recycled for reuse in the cleaning operation.

Before After Dry Ice Blast Cleaning – For the cleanest clean you’ve ever seen.
Even though it is aggressive, dry ice blast cleaning is absolutely safe to use on production equipment,
printing presses, robotic lines, electric motors, fans, walls, floors, etc. Dry ice blast cleaning will not
etch most substrate materials being cleaned and leaves behind no additional waste or residue. There
is nothing added to the waste or contaminant being cleaned because the blast medium turns into a
harmless (CO2) gas as it strikes the surface and evaporates into the atmosphere with no additional
handling requirements.
Replaces and is superior to sandblasting, steam/water blasting and solvents.
It does not erode or wear away the targeted surface as traditional grit media and wire brushes do.
Also, with dry ice blast cleaning, most equipment and machinery can be cleaned in place, eliminating
costly disassembly and reassembly. Dry ice blast cleaning is also an improvement over steam and
water blasting. Electrical parts and generators can be immediately put back in service without
waiting to dry. Finally, dry ice blast cleaning can be used in place of many environmentally damaging
solvents. When it replaces hazardous chemical cleaners the disposal cost of those chemicals is also
eliminated.
