selected works from my experience as an

following projects demonstrate my abili-

5. Door, Window, Stair
The goal of this assignment
was to design a structure
based on the elements of
door, window and stair. My
design was based on folded
ribbons of paper. The
interaction of the different
folded ribbons creates voids
that serve as windows and
the absence of a ribbon in
a wall of ribbons creates a
door. A single ribbon folded
consistently serves as the
stair.

7. The Carrefour School
After the earthquake in 2010, Haiti
struggled to rebuild. Port-au-
Prince suffered extreme dam-
age and an estimated 1.5 million
people were displaced. The pur-
pose of The Carrefour School is to
provide not only a place to learn
but also a home for orphaned girls.
The school is a safe haven for the
young girls in a country that is cur-
rently very unstable. The school
has four main buildings, admin-
istration, dorms, gym and aca-
demic.
6
9. The site plan for the Carrefour
School was a very important
aspect of this project. The site
is surrounded by residential
Process and commercial areas as well
as a busy road.
In the final site plan, the four
buildings are arranged to cre-

12. Dormitory
The design for the dorm was inspired by
the use of the front porch as a gathering
space and the need for a safe place to live.
The student occupied levels all have a front
porch area that all the bedrooms are off
of. I divided the dorm building into three
smaller houses. The student and teacher
housing was then divided between the three
houses. Each house contains some student
and some teacher housing. This creates a
living-learning environment and adds extra
security and monitoring for the girls. This
arrangement also may help create a family
atmosphere in each of the houses.
2nd and 3rd Floor Plans of Dorms 11
14. The school has all out door
walkways and operable
windows to take advan-
tage of natural ventilation.
The dorms have shutters
that allow air to flow into
the rooms but block the
sunlight from heating the
room. The dorms also
Climate each have a vent that al-
lows the hot air to flow out
the roof.
Every classroom has two
large sliding doors that fa-
cilitate cross ventilation.
All the buildings on the
campus have two roofs.
One roof shades the other
so that the suns heat is not
absorbed into the building.

15. Harry’s Coffee House
Harry’s Coffee House in Anderson,
SC is the first location of a new
chain of walk up and drive thru
coffee shops. The coffee shop is
a logo building for the new brand
and will be easily repeated on dif-
ferent lots throughout the area.
This first coffee house is located
on a small lot in a shopping center
off of a main highway. The build-
ing is only 500 square feet and can
be run by one or two people.
14
16. My design was inspired by a cozy resi-
dential cabin. The tall pitched shades
the attached seating and also allows
light to enter the coffee prep space.
The walk-up window is covered by a
smaller awning that mirrors the roof
and shows people where to place their
order.
15
17. The coffee house is only oc-
cupied by the one or two em-
ployee’s working at any given
time. My design accommo-
dates the walk up customers
by providing two different types
of seating. There are two bar
style seating areas where a
customer sit under the shady
overhang and have a place
to plug in their laptop. There
are also free standing covered
booths. These booths could be
arranged in any configuration
and each location can have
different amounts of these free
standing tables depending on
how large their lot is.

19. The Palmetto Bridge is
Palmetto Bridge one component of a larger
project that aims to con-
nect Findlay Park to the
Vista via a bike and pe-
destrian path in Columbia,
SC. The pathway for the
project follows a former
rail line path and includes
an old railway tunnel. The
bridge spans from the
park, over the road, and
leads the traveler into the
entrance to the tunnel. The
purpose of the bridge is to
not only span the road but
serve as an icon for Co-
lumbia.
The design for the bridge
was inspired by a train

The bridge features three separate paths. Each path is different. One path connects to SECTION

the park, one path connects to the sidewalk inside the park and one path ends in a platform observation deck with
stairs that connect to the green space inside the park.
The bridge is constructed of modified trusses. Some trusses are open while others are either screened or com-
pletely closed. The screens are concentrated where the bridge passes over the road. They can be printed to fea-
ture local art or even advertisements and announcements for community events. The closed trusses are distributed
throughout the top of the bridge to provide shade.

24. Campus Planning
The first step in this project was redesign-
ing a portion of Clemson University’s cam-
pus. The site is at the center of campus
and currently houses the union, a dining
hall, some retail dining and a small fresh-
man dormitory. The redevelopment of the
includes a dining hall, academic space
and 750 beds of dormitory space. My site
plan was designed based on the idea of a
downtown Main Street. The main street in
our site plan connects the fraternity quad
to the north of the site to the shoebox
dorms to the south of the site. The new
dormitories, academic space, retail space
and dining hall were then arranged along
main street.
23
26. One of the goals of the redesigned campus core is to keep students on campus after their freshman year. The
Main Street Apartments aim to bring the downtown living experience to Clemson’s campus. The three sophomore
dormitories are situated along the main pedestrian street. The six retail spaces are conveniently located on the first
floor directly across from the new academic space and dining hall. The idea is that students living in these apart-
ments could get up, grab a cup of coffee and get to class all in their little area of campus.

types of units. The top four floors of each building are

dedicated to spacious 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom apart-
ments that were designed to compete with off campus
housing options. The living rooms of every apartment

a full size bath/shower combination and each apart-
ment has a kitchen with a full size refrigerator. Some
of the apartments on the top four floors also feature a
