HURRICANE IRMA & MARIA
CRISIS BACKGROUND
Hurricanes Irma and Maria have caused tremendous
devastation to several islands in the Caribbean region.
The untold suffering of thousands of people, especially
women and children requires immediate action if this
suffering is to be alleviated rather than worsen. Thou-
sands are homeless and in shelters; thousands if not
millions more are without electricity, food supplies are
short; children are missing school and in many cases
health conditions threaten the widespread outbreak of
disease.
Over recent years these islands have suffered cata-
strophic devastation especially from hurricanes which
have resulted in thousands of deaths and billions of
damage to homes and other buildings; infrastructure
including hospitals, ports and airports; food crops and
animal stock; while at the same time severely disrupt-
ing the lives of the people and denying them the liveli-
hoods upon which they depend.
So far this 2017 hurricane season has been an historic
one with two Category Five Hurricanes-Irma and Maria
-clocking record wind strengths of more than 185 miles
per hour directly hit many of these islands including
Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Matin/Maarten; Antigua
and Barbuda; Dominica; the British Virgin Islands;
Puerto Rico; the US Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.
The Governments and Non-Government organizations
across the region are in dire need of help; and the
Hurricane Season is over yet! Supplies of generators,
medicines, hygiene kits, school supplies are in great
demand.
REPORT ON DOMINICA, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA
SUMMARY OF DAMAGES
Hurricane Irma left a wake of destruction on several
islands in the eastern Caribbean. There has been
widespread damage to infrastructure such as power,
telecommunications and water services. Many
homes have also been severely damaged. Health
facilities have also suffered serious damages ham-
pering the rapid delivery of critical emergency care
assistance. As access to the islands is slowly being
restored, it is anticipated that there will be immediate
needs across the health, WASH, food security and
shelter sectors.
1,413 people evacuated from Barbuda to Antigua
1,000 people evacuated from Family Islands to New
Providence in the Bahamas
99% of the buildings in Barbuda have been De-
stroyed
90% government buildings in Anguilla are severely
damaged
MONITORING & EVALUATION
The items requested will be sent to islands in the
Caribbean Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda. The
Red Cross Society is a certified NGO working in Anti-
gua and Barbuda and will ensure proper distribution
and use of these items for use in Disaster Relief ef-
forts in favor of for hurricane victims following a direct
hit by Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We
will conduct monitoring.
A special account has been created to help pay for ship-
ping and distribution of relief supplies and to buy & distrib-
ute local food for the hurricane victims.
Gifts designated for “Hurricane Irma” will be used in full
(100%) to assist those affected by this hurricane until the
response is complete.

ABOUT AMERICAS RELIEF
Americas Relief Team (ART) operates as an initiative of Outreach Aid to the Americas, Inc. (OAA). Its mission is to provide
humanitarian logistics assistance and educational programs for disaster victims in the Americas and develop sustainable
programs that establish long-term benefits for those in need.
ART focuses on the following three programmatic areas:
1) Disaster Preparedness, by conducting disaster prevention programs in urban centers, and ports in Latin America;
2) Disaster Response and Aid, by collaborating with partners to stage and deliver humanitarian aid after a crisis occurs;
and
3) Humanitarian Assistance to alleviate human suffering in the Americas.
To proactively prepare communities to address future critical events, ART provides planning and strategy development and
training along with the tools and resources needed to increase local preparedness and self-sufficiency. When disasters
strike, ART provides humanitarian logistics assistance to benefit disaster victims and reduce the suffering of the most vulner-
able people by coordinating effective and efficient humanitarian relief.
ART is accomplishing its mission by creating and cultivating strategic agreements with key non-profit and corporate partners,
forging effective working relationships with U.S. and foreign government agencies, bilateral and international donor organiza-
tions, international finance organizations, faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, international and local NGOs, and
U.S. corporations. ART works in coordination with affected governments, the US Southern Command, emergency centers,
corporate donors, air and sea cargo carriers, national disaster management agencies, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), non-governmental experts, and others to assess damage and effectively channel emergency
relief to the most critical areas.
