 Industrial Psychologist John Holland, after a
research, found a connection between interests
and motivation in the work place. He developed a
theory of career choices that stated that a match
between interests and work tasks led to
motivation, satisfaction and better performance.
As a result, a mismatch between interests and
work tasks led to demotivation, dissatisfaction,
and poor performance. Additionally, he
discovered that interests can be categorized into
six major areas ( dimensions).

Journalist, Lawyer, Medical Researcher,
Professor, Psychologist
 Artistic children are gifted, original, creative,
free spirited, colourful and imaginative.
Sometimes they are mistaken to be
daydreaming / wishful thinking. They enjoy
playing musical instruments and art. They
even refine their class assignments.
 ARTISTIC CAREERS ; Architect, beautician,
author, culinary artist, fashion designer,
actor, interior designer, Landscaping and
Extension Designer, Musician, Web designer
 They prefer to work in a group and are
interested in the well being of others. Hence,
they make friends easily. They end up
teaching, counselling and guiding. They look
forward to school and collaborate at work.
 SOCIAL CAREERS; Customer care executive,
Event planner, Imam, Human Resource
Officer, Office Receptionist, Pastor, Physical
Trainer, Psychologist, School Teacher, Social
Service Worker, etc.
 They are attracted to leadership positions and
enjoy power and status. They are confident
and persuasive and get elected to leadership
positions. They don’t enjoy academic
pursuits. Instead, they prefer to set goals,
achieve them, and move on to next activity.

influence and manage them.

letters that denote your interest
dimensions. Your highest code reveals
your strongest interest area and can
be considered your primary RIASEC
dimension. The others are secondary
dimensions

  • 11.  Industrial Psychologist John Holland, after a research, found a connection between interests and motivation in the work place. He developed a theory of career choices that stated that a match between interests and work tasks led to motivation, satisfaction and better performance. As a result, a mismatch between interests and work tasks led to demotivation, dissatisfaction, and poor performance. Additionally, he discovered that interests can be categorized into six major areas ( dimensions).

They even refine their class assignments.  ARTISTIC CAREERS ; Architect, beautician, author, culinary artist, fashion designer, actor, interior designer, Landscaping and Extension Designer, Musician, Web designer
  • 24.  They prefer to work in a group and are interested in the well being of others. Hence, they make friends easily. They end up teaching, counselling and guiding. They look forward to school and collaborate at work.  SOCIAL CAREERS; Customer care executive, Event planner, Imam, Human Resource Officer, Office Receptionist, Pastor, Physical Trainer, Psychologist, School Teacher, Social Service Worker, etc.
  • 25.  They are attracted to leadership positions and enjoy power and status. They are confident and persuasive and get elected to leadership positions. They don’t enjoy academic pursuits. Instead, they prefer to set goals, achieve them, and move on to next activity. They like to work with people but mainly to influence and manage them.

  • 29.  All people have more than one area (dimension) of interest. E.g. Realistic, Enterprising, and Social.  The Holland code is the two or three letters that denote your interest dimensions. Your highest code reveals your strongest interest area and can be considered your primary RIASEC dimension. The others are secondary dimensions
