This workshop provides an overview of the Summer Health Institute, a collaborative with local community college, UC-Santa Cruz, and Mission Trails R.O.P. Students exposed to health related careers through an articulated summer program, including case studies at the hospital, classroom study on college campus, 60 hours of externship supervised by clinical staff and new community advocacy research and presentations. Students will present a sample of their community advocacy research and presentations.

2. Ensure the wellness and healthiness of newborns to adolescents such as diagnosing illnesses and other health problems
3. Work with the community as well as the parents on the safety of children.
4. After diagnosing a patient, the pediatrician should make recommendations, communicate with parents on the treatment that should be taken, and may communicate with other specialists.
6. Good interviewing skills, communication skills, and listening skills are the special skills a pediatrician should have.
7. Working Conditions: the usual hours of work (shift, overtime, weekends, etc) are there any age gender, or physical requirements? Physical layout of workplace (office, outside, etc.) Hazards or risks of the job.
8. Working hours of pediatricians varies. For example, from 10 am to 2 pm, a pediatrician may do hospital rounds, talk with families, review lab results, and examine patients. Another pediatrician, from 7:30 am to 9 am, may examine babies, measure babies’ length, and explain proper way of feeding babies to parents; then from 1 pm to 2 pm, eat lunch, make phone calls to patients, and read mail.

There is no age, gender, or physical requirement in becoming a pediatrician, as long as the person attends 4 years in college and 4 years in medical schools, obtains a high score in the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), and completes a year of pediatrics internship and two years of pediatric residency.

20. Before graduating undergraduate college, I would have to undergo a Premed program, where I would have to complete a semester of Calculus, two years in Biology, a year of English, a year of Physics, and two years of Chemistry.
21. For my Bachelor Degree, I would take nursing, and then specialize in pediatrics nursing. Other than this, I will take several internships involving child care and diagnosing illnesses. I may take psychology and drama as minor. By doing all these, a medical school may accept me.
22. There are three possible levels of experience: The first one requires Doctor of Medicine degree (MD). The second one requires three years of experience as a resident in pediatrics and successful completion of medical licensing exams. The third one requires numerous years of experience, a solid reputation, and established group of patients.
23. The first level of experience is called resident in Pediatrics and works with patients under supervision of licensed doctors. The second level is called Pediatrician and works with patients with parents or families without any supervision. The third level is called established Pediatrician and do responsibilities of the first and second level, but advocate children’s problems, accomplish research activities, and perform administrative activities.
24. As of now, I am still skeptic of being accepted into medical school and attending a good college due to lack of financial support. But I believe obtaining good grades and handling stress in a healthy way will prepare me for the future.

26. Before becoming a certified Pediatrician, a person has to go through 11 to 12 years of training.
27. Formal education and training are required. Generally, a person has to complete 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internships and residency.
28. Premed students must take Physics, English, Mathematics, Biology, and Inorganic and organic Chemistry.
29. To obtain the license, a pediatrician must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). But a pediatrician must graduate from an “accredited” medical school first before he/she is eligible to take the exam.
