The primary purpose of the role is to facilitate the legal and sustainable trade of CITES-listed species
Functional area:
Provide comment and advice on proposals, recommendations and correspondence from
colleagues, DOC staff, national and international agencies and prepare and present agreed
advice as required
Process CITES permit applications within statutory timeframes
Check and identify products made from CITES-listed species
Monitor and record items seized at the New Zealand border through national CITES Database
Respond to public enquiries; Engagement with local communities
Liaise with CITES and DOC staff to provide advice to managers on CITES management and
administration as appropriate
Issuing of Wildlife Act 1959 permits and certificates in collaboration with the Permissions
Department.
Knowledge and experience of international trade, quarantine procedures and identification of
exotic fauna and flora.
Working knowledge of IATA Live Animal Transport requirements
Provide advice, support and training to MPI and Customs staff
