Capital Punishment
ERIN BROWN
Forms of Cruel and Unusual Punishment
Flaying
-Usually only performed on
captured enemies during a war
-Skinning to death
-The shock of flaying caused
death within minutes of the
execution
Devouring by Animals
DAMNATIO AD BESTIAS
LATIN FOR “CONDEMNATION TO BEAST”
*Devouring by animals was used on early
Christians and slaves
*Used in the 1st and 3rd century A.D. in Rome as
entertainment
*Other types of animals used to carry out the
punishment were elephants, lions, alligators,
and horses.
Breaking Wheel
•The breaking wheel was
developed in Greece in the 19th
century.
•The victims limbs were tied to
the wheel spokes, then rolled
down a hill breaking the
persons bones and leaving
them to die.
•This form of punishment was
reserved for the most hated
criminals.
Burning
-Method used in 1600 and 1700
-Offences calling for burning
were melting or counterfeiting
money and witches, or those
practicing witchcraft.
-The last person to be burned as
a witch was Janet Horne of
Scotland
Gibbeting
Gibbeting was a 1700
gallows type execution
performed in a public place
to deter other criminals.
In some cases the victim
was locked in a cage before
they were hung to die.
Those were traitors,
pirates, and/or murderers
could face this type of
public execution.
Eventually, in some
locations, those who were
hung became tourist
attractions, hanging until
even their clothes began to
rot.
Cooking
Cooking or boiling criminals was popular in the 1200 to 1300s. Wrong doers were kettle cooked in water,
oil, or tar. It was not uncommon for the executer to control or prolong the torture by raising or lowering
the victim with a hook and pulley. Some were plunged in head first while others sat half way immerged in
boiling water as they melted away. This method was considered one of the worse forms of capital
punishment.
Decapitation
Beheading is intentionally removing the head
from the body.
Saudi Arabia is currently the only country that
still beheads offenders.
This process is preformed using an axe, sword,
knife, or wire.
The person who decapitates the offender is
called a headsman.
Slow Slicing
REMOVING PARTS OF THE BODY OVER TIME
-Slow slicing was used for punishment
for those who murdered their masters
or employers.
-Slicing was banned in 1905.
-In some cases, cuts or slices would
start on arms and legs before the
executer stabbed the offender in the
heart or throat to kill them.
