Aluminium is primarily extracted from bauxite, which contains aluminium oxide, through energy-intensive primary production or more cost-effective recycling. The extraction process involves separating impurities, digesting bauxite with concentrated sodium hydroxide, and precipitating aluminium hydroxide, which is then further processed through calcination and electrolysis. Cryolite is used as a solvent to lower the melting point during electrolysis, facilitating the reduction of aluminium ores to metal.
