A recent article brought focus to the work of Sloan Kettering Institute researchers into stem
cells and how they “decide their fate.” A special attribute of stem cells is the way they can
differentiate into cell types that are more specialized through the process of dividing into two.
There are three options in this, with both cells either continuing as stem cells, both
differentiating into a new cell type, or one continuing as a stem cell and one transforming into
something new.
The current research focuses on leukemia and a RNA methylation mechanism that controls
the way stem cells regulate themselves as they divide. In mice, the absence of METTL3 RNA
binding proteins seems to result in a blood stem cell accumulation, in tandem with an inability
for the stem cells to turn into more specialized cells. By better understanding the mechanism
that decides how stem cells divide, researchers hope to grow a significant number of stem
cells in the lab for potential application against leukemia.
