This document discusses the challenge of interoperability between different public safety agencies. It describes how agencies currently have incompatible radio systems that prevent real-time communication, especially during multi-jurisdictional emergencies. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is working on several initiatives to address this problem, including supporting new technology development, testing pilot programs, developing standards, and educating stakeholders. The NIJ's AGILE program takes a comprehensive approach, with the goal of improving information sharing between law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency responders to enable better coordination during incidents and emergencies.
