This document discusses a study on the relationship between second language acquisition and schizophrenia. The study found that while schizophrenia causes language deficits in patients' first language, many patients do not show these same deficits when using a second language. The research suggests that studying second language performance could provide useful insights for research on second language acquisition and schizophrenia.
Generalized Capital Investment Planning w/ Sequence-Dependent Setups Industri...Alkis Vazacopoulos
Presented in this short document is a description of what we call the “Generalized” Capital Investment Planning (GCIP) problem where conventional capital investment planning (CIP), and specifically for the “retrofit” problem, is discussed in Sahinidis and Grossmann (1989) and Liu and Sahinidis (1996). CIP is the optimization problem where it is desired to expand the capacity and/or extend the capability (conversion) of either the “expansion” of an existing unit or the “installation” of a new unit (Jackson and Grossmann, 2002).
Figure 1 shows the three types of CIP problems as defined in Vazacopoulos et. al. (2014) and Menezes (2014) with its capital cost and time scales.

The research topic aimed to analyze and investigate teaching English pronunciation of Spanish speakers. In this regard, thorough understanding and analysis of speech sounds, phonetics, speech organs, consonants, vowels, and voiced and non-voiced notes were discussed in a critical manner. The introduction presented the aim, objectives, and research questions along with explaining the rationale of the research topic and determining the scope of the research. The rationale for the research topic was found in the form of importance of learning correct ways of pronunciation especially for non-English speakers. The literature review discussed about the speech sounds, vowels, consonants, speech organs, and production of sounds in a critical manner. The literature review served the purpose of dealing with the research topic in an in-depth manner. It was found that the correct pronunciation is dependent on positioning of tongue and lips and also the movement of air within and outside the mouth and nose. The literature review added great deal of value in this research. The research methodology explained the reason behind selecting the anti-positivism research philosophy and inductive research approach along with the use of questions and graphics for enhancing the pronunciation of students in a well-planned manner. It explained the methodology used in analyzing the major outcomes of the research. The proposed framework explained the framework used in enhancing the pronunciation of students. The conclusion and recommendation concluded that enhancing English pronunciation requires continuous effort along with proper understanding over the production of speech sounds, sound movement, and vowels and consonants production and pronunciation

Autism self-management treatment without child's vocalization. Inappropriate language replacement with verbal labeling will be more functional than the normal verballing.
Who
The psychologists are working towards developing a stimuli language that will help autistic students improve their learning and responding skills. Echolalia's language has always responded inappropriately to questions that should replace verbal representation for more effectiveness.
What
Children with
autism are normally rejected and treated differently from others. Standardizing their learning skills or rather simplifying their response through verbal stimulation will, in turn, raise self-management.
When
The program generalization and maintenance will take place in phases. They are evolving from the initial settings to the new vocalization.
Where
The research will be conducted in a wide range to ensure more participants are reached out.
Why?
The intended project will ease communication between autism-affected children and others as well as between themselves.

Topic sentence
Coming up with the visual language entails the incorporation of knowledge from the physician to the verbal developer.
Observation 1
In an experiment to test the language, the sequence wording in a sentence or a question must be repeated for emphasis regardless of verbalization.
Support 1
Though verbalization may have considered most accurate concerning autism, errors may occur, which may amount to the incorrect response. Therefore, the tutor must proofread the question to ensure correctness. A combination of correct and incorrect verbiage will add up to an incorrect and inappropriate presentation.
Conclusion
The tutor should go through the verbalized questions to ensure no errors may lead to incorrect responses. This will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of audiotaped or videos as intended.

From the research, communication improvement will improve their learning skills and how the affected interact with other children. Autism children are frequently discriminated against due to a lack of mutual understanding.
Support 1
On the conducted research, according to Karl, his module went through upon the third trial. This is a positive indication that verbalization can be depended upon when questioning.
Conclusion
Though the stimuli differed from one participant to the other, at least there is a mutual language used by both the tutor and the respondent. This indicates a positive step towards verbalization.

Role of Speech Therapy in Overcoming Lexical Deficit in Adult Broca’s Aphasia
Tanzeela Abid & Dr. Habibullah Pathan,
English Language Development Centre, Faculty of Science, Technology and Humanities, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan
This is an exploratory study and qualitative in nature. Unit of exploration is ‘Adult Broca’s Aphasic Patients.’ This paper aims to explore the function and integrity of ‘Speech Therapy’ for adult Broca’s aphasia. Aphasia is the after-effect of brain damage, commonly found in left hemisphere which disrupts language faculty. The present study focuses on ‘Lexical’ aspect of language in which an individual faces trouble in processing of words. In Broca’s aphasia affected individual suffers from diminished capability of speaking/communication. To recover such diminished capabilities, speech therapy is utilized. This study intends to investigate the effectiveness of speech therapy that how speech therapy helps to adult Broca’s aphasia to recover their speaking or conversing skills? Participants of the study are ‘Speech therapists.’ Purposeful sampling, particularly Snowball sampling has been undertaken. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted from five speech therapists, which have been analyzed through thematic analysis under the light of ‘Sketch Model’ given by De ruiter and De beer (2013). The Findings of the study suggest that speech therapy may be proved helpful for Broca’s aphasia to recover their communicating capabilities but it requires much time (minimum 6 months). Moreover, recovery depends upon certain factors such as age, level of disorder and willingness.

LANGUAGE CHARACTERISTICS SUPPORTING EARLY ALZHEIMER'S DIAGNOSIS THROUGH MACHI...hiij
Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is the most common incurable neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Apart from memory loss, AD leads to speech disorders. Timely diagnosis is crucial to halt the progression of the disease. However, current diagnostic procedures are costly, invasive, and distressing. Early-stage AD manifests itself in speech disorders, which implies examining those. Machine Learning (ML) represents a promising instrument in this context.
Nevertheless, no genuine consensus on the language characteristics to be analyzed exists. To counteract this deficit and provide topic-related researchers with a better basis for decision-making, we present, based on a literature review, favourable speech characteristics for the appliance toward AD detection via ML. Research trends to apply spontaneous speech, gained from image descriptions, as analysis basis, and points out that the combined use of acoustic, linguistic, and demographic features positively influences recognition accuracy. In total, we have identified 97 overarching acoustic, linguistic and demographic features.

Abstract
The literature reports an increased number of aphasias involving bilingual people. Dealing with
bilingual aphasia requires particular attention from the diagnostic to the therapeutic phase. In this
review, the authors describe the possible impairment patterns, which could be different between the
two languages and be characterised by specific deficits and sometimes unexpected profiles. The role
of some crucial factors in determining the observed deficits and impairment patterns is illustrated, for
instance age of appropriation and proficiency. An early versus late language appropriation recruits
different brain processes and hence different brain structures. In general, a greater vulnerability is
observed for the late-learned languages, although a high proficiency or use and exposure appear
to prevent language impairment even in the case of late appropriation. The authors also discussed
the role of other intervening factors, such as emotional–motivational aspects, which could explain
unusual profiles. Furthermore, language deficits specific to bilingualism, such as pathological mixing
and switching and translation problems were described. In this respect, the authors underlined the
fundamental involvement of cognitive control mechanisms and of the brain structures associated with
this. Lastly, the clinical practice issues in bilingual aphasia were outlined, underlining the need for a
careful diagnosis. This should take into account the patient’s language history in order to avoid biased
assessments and instead promote the setup of effective intervention programmes.
INTRODUCTION
The cases of bilingual aphasia are increasing
worldwide, as they also reflect the globally
increasing number of individuals speaking more
than two languages (representing more than
half of the population),1,2 who are referred to as
bilinguals, irrespective of the number of known
languages. Bilinguals differentiate one another
under multiple aspects and their clinical language
profiles may differ. In this review, the authors
provide an overview of the different bilingual
aphasia profiles and the factors associated with
these different conditions, providing hints for
their understanding and treatment.

The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual
By Viorica Marian, Ph.D., and Anthony Shook
Editor’s note: Today, more of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual than
monolingual. In addition to facilitating cross-cultural communication, this trend also positively
affects cognitive abilities. Researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better
attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain, thanks to its developed
ability to inhibit one language while using another. In addition, bilingualism has positive effects
at both ends of the age spectrum: Bilingual children as young as seven months can better adjust
to environmental changes, while bilingual seniors can experience less cognitive decline.
We are surrounded by language during nearly every waking moment of our lives. We use
language to communicate our thoughts and feelings, to connect with others and identify with our
culture, and to understand the world around us. And for many people, this rich linguistic
environment involves not just one language but two or more. In fact, the majority of the world’s
population is bilingual or multilingual. In a survey conducted by the European Commission in
2006, 56 percent of respondents reported being able to speak in a language other than their
mother tongue. In many countries that percentage is even higher—for instance, 99 percent of
Luxembourgers and 95 percent of Latvians speak more than one language.
1
Even in the United
States, which is widely considered to be monolingual, one-fifth of those over the age of five
reported speaking a language other than English at home in 2007, an increase of 140 percent
since 1980.
2
Millions of Americans use a language other than English in their everyday lives
outside of the home, when they are at work or in the classroom. Europe and the United States are
not alone, either. The Associated Press reports that up to 66 percent of the world’s children are
2
raised bilingual.
3
Over the past few decades, technological advances have allowed researchers to
peer deeper into the brain to investigate how bilingualism interacts with and changes the
cognitive and neurological systems.
Cognitive Consequences of Bilingualism
Research has overwhelmingly shown that when a bilingual person uses one language, the
other is active at the same time. When a person hears a word, he or she doesn’t hear the entire
word all at once: the sounds arrive in sequential order. Long before the word is finished, the
brain’s language system begins to guess what that word might be by activating lots of words that
match the signal. If you hear “can,” you will likely activate words like “candy” and “candle” as
well, at least during the earlier stages of word recognition. For bilingual people, this activation is
not limited to a single language; auditory input activates corresponding words regardless of the
language to which ...
Language functions in patients with epilepsyzeynepzeliha
Abstract.
Epilepsy, as a chronic disorder, often impacts cognitive skills including language. A correlation between language impairment and epilepsy is frequently reported. The neuroanatomical underpinnings of processing lexical semantics and phonology have been investigated in several clinical and imaging studies but it is unknown whether this language impairment develops gradually as a consequence of epilepsy or precedes the onset of seizures. In this research, we administered the ‘Ambiguous Word Test’ to 25 epileptic patients (12 diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy, 8 left-sided, 4 right-sided, and 13 diagnosed with idiopathic generalized epilepsy) and 40 healthy controls.
GENDER AND IDENTITY ISSUES IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION.docxResearchWap
Extensive language acquisition is determined by a level of dexterity in the four language skills namely speaking, listening, reading and writing. Listening and speaking, in this order, have been described as the most important two as language transcends the semiotic, that is the language for communication, and role. Language is both a sociological and political tool that influences man more than man does it; in it, a person’s worldview is determined to the extent that language is consciousness so that such things as art especially the literary kind become a production of this consciousness at the same time a product of it. Disciplines like anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics, history, etc., invest much time in the study of language as the latter bear upon any deep human-related study. As a result, bridge disciplines have sprung up over the last few decades such as sociolinguistics and so on.
However, it is the application of language studies in things like marketing, advertisement, social media strategies, programming, etc., that inform the surging call for more diverse language-related studies. One of such is on the issues of gender and identity in second language acquisition.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Second Language Acquisition and Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder. One of the
many symptoms is the malfunction of the
language capacity of the patients, such as
inventing words or producing nonsensical
speeches. However, it is suggested that many of
the patients don't reveal these linguistic deficits in
a second language performance. Thus, this
research shows the relationship between the
second language acquisition and schizophrenia. It
is hoped to be useful in the second language
acquisition researches.
2. Based on Seliger and Shohamy an empirical knowledge can be
obtained through the process of experimentation and observation
by interacting with natural world. Moreover, this type of knowledge
is characterized by observing a phenomena and drawing
conclusions through experimentation and experience. Thefore, we
arrived at the conclusion that this article is based on empirical
knowledge because it was observed pacients with schizophrenia
and through experiments it was reached a conclusion.
3. According to Seliger and Shohamy there is often interaction between
basic, applied and practical research. They said that applied research
influenced the construction and revision of theories and hypotheses
developed in basic research in order to be “applied”.
For this reason, we can say that this article is applied research because
it was concluded, based on the results, that the pacients have less
troubles learning the second language than the first language. Moreover,
it has a theory behind that supports what they have applied in order to
get the results about second language acquisition and schizophrenia.
