Crown Agents has a long history working for overseas governments and administrations dating back to the 1700s. It began as private agents for British colonies and gradually took on more official roles working directly with colonial governments. In the post-colonial era beginning in the 1950s, Crown Agents expanded its work with developing countries and international donors. Today it has over 1,000 staff working in over 40 offices worldwide providing procurement, supply chain, and public finance management services. Crown Agents has worked with the Government of Japan since the 1980s on non-project grant aid programs, humanitarian assistance, and other projects.
