The preamble of the Indian constitution was inspired by the American constitution and developed based on the Objective Resolution put forth by Jawaharlal Nehru. It establishes India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic and republic state where justice, liberty, equality and fraternity form its guiding principles. The preamble was amended in 1976 to add the words 'socialist' and 'secular'. It is the introduction to the constitution and outlines the objectives and ideals of the Indian republic.
