In 1986, a group of birdwatchers discovered the 87 hectare Sungei Buloh wetland site and proposed it be conserved. It was designated as a nature park in 1989 and developed by the National Parks Board in consultation with wildlife experts. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong officially opened the Nature Park in 1993, and it has since become a popular site that welcomed its 100,000th visitor in 1994. In 2001, the site was gazetted as a nature reserve to better reflect its ecological importance.

Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that hosts thousands of birds, especially during the winter season. Over 230 species of birds are known to be resident. It is also a major tourist centre with scores of ornithologists arriving here in the hibernal season. - 1. SUNGEI BULOH EBS PROJECT The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is Singapore's first and only protected wetland nature park. It is home to over 500 species of tropical flora and fauna. The 87 hectares of conserved wetland habitat is a "refueling point" for birds on the East Asian Flyway. Carefully constructed hides and boardwalks provide a close-up view of the flora and fauna in the Park.
